‘Fauxductivity’ (pretending to be productive), is this really an issue? People Management magazine’s latest article explores this question, with the help of experts including our brilliant HR Client Manager, Helen Scullion Assoc. CIPD! Helen suggested “Enabling employees to have autonomy over how they achieve their objectives allows for more flexibility and creates room for authentic productivity, reducing the pressure for employees to be seen as visibly ‘on’ all the time. “Line managers should have regular check-ins with their remote employees to ensure that their workload aligns with team goals and to create a safe space for feedback and questions. Not really what I wanted to see on a Friday afternoon. Gallup's recent State of the Global Workforce 2024 report, claims that 90% of the UK workforce feel disengaged at work and are "quiet quitting# and that low employee engagement cost the UK over £257 billion annually or 11% of its GDP. Despite these high levels of disengagement and employees feeling dissatisfied in their roles, only a third of UK employees a seeking a new job. Lower levels of job vacancies mean that many of the quiet quitters are also stuck where they are #quietquitting #employeeexperience #employeeengagement

The “hidden cost” of employee sickness reached £103bn in 2023 – an increase of £30bn since 2018, a report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has found. Yet, we find Smart Leadership can reduce sickness rates by... Ensuring employees feel psychologically safe, promoting work-life balance, fostering a supportive work culture, and improving communication. Providing access to mental health resources, encouraging flexible work arrangements and creating an environment where employees feel valued can prevent burnout and lower absenteeism. Additionally, training managers to recognise and address stress and mental health issues early can further support employee well-being. The majority of HR practitioners feel unequipped to meet their organisation’s needs, and struggle to maintain a good work-life balance, research reveals. Do you agree? Well done on this great article Isabel Jackson, 👏 which shines a light on how many HR professionals are feeling right now. It was a pleasure to add my view to this article and comment on the research: Lisa Murphy, CEO of Limelite HR, said the profession has had to “rapidly develop new skills and knowledge” and “step up and help to steer and guide organisations, often at a detriment to our own wellbeing”. “This year we’ve already seen significant changes to the employment law landscape, but this may just be the tip of the iceberg if the political landscape changes following the general election,” she said. “We deal with very difficult situations but, unlike coaches or counsellors, there is no expected form of ‘supervision’ or formal support, and the training we’ve had often doesn’t equip us with the practical or softer skills needed to manage the most challenging of situations we have to face. “You only have to look at how many successful online HR communities there are to see that our profession is actively, sometimes desperately, seeking professional and emotional support from others, and feeling lonely, unappreciated and ill-equipped.” What do you think, should HR have more support for their own wellbeing, or even formal Supervision?
