Nothing more, nothing less, just fair and balanced that’s all we ask. One third of all business rates on top of being one of the most highly taxed sectors in Europe is adding more pressure than ever to our beleaguered sector. Of course hospitality will continue to endure, evolve and survive but to stimulate real, sustained growth the UK government must provide a long-term roadmap. Glimmers Of Hope’ For Hospitality Sector Says UKHospitality CEO There are ‘glimmers of hope’ for the hospitality sector following years of intense cost squeezes and unpredictability battering businesses according to the chief executive of UKHospitality Kate Nicholls. Speaking at the Arena 2024 Savoy Lecture on 22nd April 2024, Nicholls delivered a sector update in which she expressed positivity that the challenges the hospitality sector has faced were potentially ‘coming to an end’ with a more positive and predictable economic environment in sight. “It’s never been harder to turn that top line revenue into a bottom-line profit,” she said, acknowledging that increases in food, water and electricity costs, and the cost-of-living crisis, were having “a real, continued impact” on businesses. she offered reasons for optimism, including the rebounding of global travel and signs of recovery in business, meetings and events, and a projected increase in consumer spend over the coming months, with socialising and eating and drinking out still a priority for consumers. She cautiously suggested the industry was “potentially over the worst”, with inflation set to ease to 3.2% in March, interest cuts expected later this year, and energy and food prices starting to come down, which should feed into improving consumer confidence. The event was followed by networking drinks, a canapé reception and a three-course dinner, as well as a raffle, which raised over £900 for industry charities the Springboard Charity and Hospitality Action. #ExpertOpinion! Hospitality industry - Squeezing revenue beyond hotel rooms Hoteliers are starting to realise that room rates alone can’t drive the profits they need. As many reach a ceiling when it comes to average daily rates (ADR), there’s a question mark hanging over how to boost the bottom line. It has to come from other revenue streams, but many are struggling to make this work. Here’s a closer look at where the opportunities lie. Hotel room rates have been increasing for a while now. Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) is up by 17% in Europe compared to January 2020 (HotStats). Estimates of the increase in ADR at high end hotels suggest a 50% increase since pre-pandemic levels (Travel Weekly). But hoteliers are increasingly aware that these rates cannot continue to climb indefinitely. Just updating my UK slides for upcoming presentations and realised there is quite a change in theme for hotel profitability In 2022 / 2023, F&B profits and Energy costs were the key headwinds. In 2024: UK hotel profit margin is up just under 1 percentage point (pps) (30.8% from 29.9%) Energy costs have fallen by 1.5pps of total revenue F&B Profits have increased by 0.6pps of total revenue Rooms booking costs and in room expenses have impacted positively by 0.7pps Undistributed expenses and total labour costs have impacted negatively by 1.4pps. Everything is relative of course, but take the positives where we can!

Imagine this: We work in an industry where we proudly claim to be an industry focused, on showing care for our teams, guests, and owners. Now, someone comes to you and says, "I'm in London, and I want to offer a free workshop to help people in our industry find their purpose. All I need is a room for 90 minutes, and I'd like the hotel to send some staff to join for free upto 20 people. Allowing them to invite 6 people in London have expressed interest in attending, also for free." Yet, despite sending emails, messages, and making direct requests, there's either no response or a flat-out "no." By the way, this isn't about me personally, but it did happen—and I find it hard to understand. In an industry dealing with so many mental health challenges, why wouldn't anyone want to support an initiative that gives back and helps people define their personal purpose? It’s mind-boggling to me. Or maybe I’m wrong to think this way—what are your thoughts?

As a former hotelier i know how important is guest freedback. Mostly, unsatisfied guest would leave your hotel and write a bad review on Google, Tripadvisor or OTA's.
