SC24 is kicking off right about now so all the big news will be filtering out during the course of this week. Google have chosen to get out ahead though with an update of all that’s new from GCP in the world of HPC (see cloud updates in the link below for more). Finding someone from financial services at SC24 though is a bit like playing Where’s Waldo. Over the last twenty years I’ve worked at financial institutions that have operated compute grids that would comfortably have featured in the Top500. Not that such a thing would ever have been made public! In a similar vein, attending SC in Atlanta is just something that doesn’t seem to be the done thing by financial services HPC folk. What’s up with that? Though I do see Aneo have a presence there this year. We could get into an argument about how financial risk calculations aren’t really HPC and that they’re HTC… But given that portfolio risk can fall closer to HPC than HTC (and makes a significant portion of the workload these days) and that even most traditional supercomputers spend a (significant) portion of their time running HTC workloads now does that really matter? I see these kinds of curiosities repeated elsewhere in the HPC world too. AWS’ HTC Grid for example is now a part of FINOS rather than the HPSF (both are under the Linux Foundation). Lastly, HPC Club is fully booked but we are operating a waitlist should anyone drop out. If you’re booked a place and can’t make it, please do let us know so someone else can take the place. I met up with Dave a couple of months ago in Leeds to show him the latest bit of magic I created. It's just some creative use of Terraform, DevOps and some out of the box usage of existing Python libraries, but Dave thinks this stuff is otherworldly! So we're staring into my cauldron, skimming through my book of magic, and he says something to me like, and I'm paraphrasing here... "How do you handle being so unbelievably clever and having this much knowledge and capability?" To which I replied... "You know I'm only operating at about 20% in this job right?!" Which in hindsight is a ridiculously arrogant thing to say, I didn't mean it like that. And of course, folks out there would gasp "Oh only 20% effort, pay him less!!" but my point is that most days I don't even have to try. Even when I push myself to learn something new or do something in a different, more efficient way, working in tech just isn't that difficult. For me. And I still churn output that would make most folks in tech envious. I've been trying to think about why since that day. I still don't have an answer. All I know is that I absolutely love working in this field. I love working with tech, making computers go boop boop beep beep, solving business problems, wowing people every day without much effort. Although I still don't think I'm even close to a 10x developer, those guys...wow! But it's not all sunshine and roses, believe me! Often I find being efficient and highly impactive has a downside. Business people expect more. Too much. Imagine a task takes 8 hours and I do it in 1. The next task takes 12 hours and the business complains when it's not in done in 1. This is a regular occurrence for me. Even though for someone else it might take anywhere between 4 and 16 hours to complete, because I take 2 I get grief for the delay. I try to take it as compliment that people just don't like me if they just think I'm smug, arrogant, too clever, a girly swot etc. I wouldn't have it any other way, and I think at 43 I'm finally starting to accept that and stopping dumbing myself down just to be liked.

On this Earth Day lets bring your attention to the increasing demand of data storage facilities which requires Google's sites alone each day consumes 1703435.3 litres of water to keep the systems cool to avoid over heating. If you have any old pictures or documents which you don't need delete them to make a difference, this is all costing resources to store your data within the cloud creating the demand for more water to be used for cooling.

Morning. Here's my summary of the Nordic APIs Platform Summit last week. ▶️ People love a bit of #TypeSpec (or if they don't they at least pretend to be interested). Had a packed room for my talk on what we are up to at Ozone API, many interested faces, and the odd laugh (with me or at me?) Thanks to Cailin S. for kicking the session off and giving all the fine details that hand-waving architects like me lack. ▶️ I heard a lot about #API security and a fair amount of people saying "it's hard". I think there's an opportunity to move on from this. How can we, for example, make authorization easier for regular humans to comprehend? So you can assert "yes" to sharing your data and understand the consequences in exact terms? It's an old problem but one we don't as an industry seem to be getting any closer to answering. ▶️ Nice to see #Arazzo put in an appearance courtesy of Budhaditya Bhattacharya. Another packed room for that. As always looking forward to the next one! Great to see you Bill Doerrfeld - need to make sure we get a beer next time.
