Starting a VA business today? Here are 5 mistakes to avoid... 👇 📜 No contract. A contract protects you and your client. Not having one means they can terminate you, not pay you or even shift roles because there is nowhere to prove word of mouth agreements. 🔊 Not talking about my business. You never know where your first client is. Build a brand and keep sharing what you do because closed mouths don't get fed. 💰 Not having a strategy to increase rates. When starting, remember that the goal is to keep growing your skills and business. Which means taking courses, buying templates etc. Have a conversation before hand on what deliverables should be met and what percentage should be the base increase to cater for inflation. 💻 Not creating a portfolio. Create mock projects on canva, practice using capcut/filmora and management tools like Notion, showcase your work and show how you use those tools to deliver great results. ⚙️ Not including platform fees to my rates. When deciding how much you'll charge, always include platform fees for editing tools, project management tools, CRM tools and anything else you use for the client. What else would you add? As a virtual assistant trainee I noticed there are some challenges we don't really talk about like the realities of being a virtual assistant: Challenges Behind the Scenes Being a Virtual Assistant (VA) comes with a unique set of challenges that require adaptability, problem-solving, and a proactive mindset. Behind the flexibility and remote work opportunities are daily hurdles that many might not realize: Time Management: Balancing multiple clients, projects, and time zones is one of the biggest challenges. Prioritizing tasks and staying organized is critical to ensuring deadlines are met without compromising quality. Communication Barriers: Clear communication is essential when working remotely. Sometimes, navigating different communication styles and expectations across various clients can be tricky, especially when context or non-verbal cues are missing. Tech Troubles: As a VA, you rely heavily on technology to get things done. But we all know that tech isn’t always reliable. From internet outages to software glitches, being able to troubleshoot and pivot quickly is key. Work-Life Balance: The flexibility that comes with being a VA is a double-edged sword. While it allows for greater autonomy, it can also blur the boundaries between work and personal life. It’s essential to establish clear working hours and stick to them to avoid burnout. Client Management: Working with multiple clients means adapting to different working styles and expectations. Throughout my secondary school years, I struggled with the fear of being judged for my communication skills. One incident where a student teased me about my language deeply affected me, causing me to withdraw from interacting with students of other religions. This experience cast a shadow over my entire secondary school period. After school, family circumstances prevented me from pursuing further studies. I started my career as an operator, working for two years before transitioning to an admin role, which I have held for almost seven years. During this time, I dedicated myself to learning and growing, and I am now a proud admin, virtual assistant, Canva designer, public speaker, emcee, and freelancer. Additionally, I am pursuing a degree in Human Resource Management (BHRM). Despite my achievements, I still feel that something is missing. I don't have friends at work to share ideas with or learn from, and I often feel isolated in my journey. Now, I am eager to change this.
