Amadeus has been listed as a top three investor in dedicated UK semiconductor companies by value and number of fundraisings 🏆 The UK Government's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has named Amadeus in the findings of its semiconductor study, which produces a baseline of semiconductor-related economic activity in the UK. Here's some highlights from the report: 📈 Dedicated semiconductor companies generated £9.6 billion in revenues in 2022, of which more than 40% (£4.1 billion) was generated by UK headquartered companies. 💰Among dedicated semiconductor companies, revenue per employee ranges from £225,000 among micro-sized enterprises to £750,000 among large enterprises. 🤝Dedicated companies employ an estimated 15,000 people in the UK. One of the questions I’m frequently asked is how Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs) will continue to grow as their traditional short-haul markets become more mature.  In my latest blog, I explore how Amadeus’ study - Travel Technology Investment Trends 2024 - provides new insight into the question. Firstly, 54 per cent of LCCs are looking into interlining with Full-Service Carriers (FSCs) to extend their reach and gain access to new groups of customers. This can provide additional bookings and increase margins by targeting high-yielding business travelers, for example. Secondly, indirect sales are on the agenda for many LCCs. The top drivers for selling via agencies, both traditional bricks and mortar and online travel agencies (OTAs), include the possibility of reaching new potential passengers, increasing brand awareness and, again, and potentially reaching higher-value passengers. Finally, LCCs are working to fuel growth by reducing operating costs with improvements to network and schedule planning, as well as investment in new technology. One in three LCCs is investing in biometrics this year, for example, with the view that this will help minimize costs and simplify their operational model. Datalex, a "market leader in airline retail technology", has announced a €25m fundraising and introduced its Offer & Order Management Systems (OMS) earlier this week - following other "market leaders" such as Amadeus, Sabre and FLYR. I've read their PR with curiosity: 👉 "Modern Airline Retail standards including IATA’s Retailing with Offers and Delivering with Orders capabilities (Previously NDC, ONE Order, Dynamic Offers and Interline with Offers and Orders)" => While the original intent was "modernization of airline distribution", I thought that breaking down the program in "small projects", like NDC for distribution, would make the adoption faster and easier 😭 👉 "It is also ready for the move to a legacy free and PSS independent Offers & Orders world" => Should it simply say that the future is legacy free and PSS free, not only PSS independent... 🤔 👉 "Optimise disruptions with enhanced servicing functionalities when disruptions occur" => Managing disruption on the day of travel, especially mass disruption when multiple flights are cancelled, is a major pain point for airlines and a great use case for Order Management... I can't wait to see the solutions ☺️   This announcement is timely as Virgin Australia has just chosen Sabre Mosaic as their future OMS.   The fundraising announcement also caught my attention: 👉 The latest company's market cap, as of 25 Sep 2024, is about €53m. The latest financial results show a negative profit margin of 30% on a revenue of less than €30m, with negative free cash flow and total cash of about €3.5m. 👉 Assuming that part of the €25m fundraising is used to repay some debt, how much is left to invest in the OMS and build it to scale?   While I welcome a new OMS in the market - the opportunity is huge as airlines transition their PSS to OMS - I will keep an eye on the company's financial situation, see stock price chart below 👇 , which has already rebounded a couple of times (2008, 2019). #airlineNDC #traveltech #OMS

The fastest-growing part of International Airlines Group (IAG), and the most dependable earner, is not flying people business class on British Airways, but its loyalty division, IAG Loyalty. In the first six months of the year, it boosted its operating profits by 13 per cent to £193 million, pipping the resurgent British Airways, the largest part of the group where the profits were 11 per cent higher. IAG Loyalty was the group’s cash cow, in the first quarter of the year, traditionally a tough trading period for European airlines according to The Times, with profits of £80 million, larger than any other division. "It appears to be a win-win-win operation. IAG makes money from an asset-light business and, unlike an airline, it is non-seasonal, with the cash rolling in all year round. The partners like the model because issuing points drives loyalty to their own brands. Splits payments case study Airlines are looking at ways to curb the possibility of a transaction not going through. So why does a transaction fail? One of the reasons for a failed transaction can be owing to insufficient funds, especially on high-ticket items like air travel, or a group planning a trip together, but if one traveller had to pay the entire cost on one credit card at checkout, it could lead to cart abandonment. One way is to let the lead booker split a payment equally, and then allow this individual to share a link with others on the same trip to wrap up the transaction. Only a single PNR is created. "This way passengers are allowed to split the full payment with other travellers that are part of the same group travel at checkout, ensuring everyone pays their fair share without anyone having to front the entire purchase," said Yago Casasnovas, Air Europa, who said the plan is to reduce payment failures. Amadeus released their 2024 half-year results yesterday, featuring double-digit revenue and profit growth, but today the stock price is trading 1€ below the day before the results. So I had a look at their presentation, as an observer of travel tech rather than a financial analyst. Here is what I've found between the lines:   👉 Air bookings: Amadeus quarterly air bookings for Q2 2024 are at 117m compared to 145m in Q2 2019, while Sabre quarterly air bookings went from 130m pre-Covid to 85m in 2024. Although the air travel industry has globally recovered, Amadeus has not fully yet, still better than Sabre. Until June 2018, reported an operating KPI called "TA air competitive position", at 43.5% of a market defined as total air bookings of travel agencies processed by global CRS. As mentioned earlier, I'd be curious to see an air booking split between EDIFACT and NDC, a split of air bookings that are processed by "global CRS" (GDS) or not… and how the NDC bookings translate into revenue in the future 🤔   👉 Passengers boarded: the 553m passenger boarded in Q2 2024 exceeded the all-time high of 3Q 2019 at 550m, showing strong momentum and wins on the PSS front. While this is great news for Amadeus, what does it mean from a market share and competitiveness perspective? How much of this outstanding PSS success may translate into Nevio, the future Offer & Order Management System that will replace the PSS?   👉 Net debt: Amadeus has a $2.6b net debt, about twice the annual Free Cash Flow, which is a sign of a financially healthy company.   👉 Stock price: the Amadeus stock is trading around €60, roughly the same as in 2018 and 20% below the highest price of 2019. The market cap is almost €28b compared to $1.3b for Sabre - about 23 times the size of the closest competitor.   👉 NDC: Besides the double-digit growth figures, Amadeus shows strong progress on NDC, with 60 airline agreements signed, 27 airlines accessible through the Amadeus Travel Platform and 80% of travel sellers that can access and service NDC content. Which is aligned with the CEO's quote: "We are at the forefront of airline retailing transformation and are advancing decisively on NDC to continue to strengthen our position as the leading enabler of indirect airline distribution."   What's your take on these results and announcements?   #airlineNDC #digitaltransformation #amadeus
