Attended an 'econometrics geekfest' at the IAB UK this morning. Not my words, but those of Mike Follett which I thought summed up the morning nicely! Some important themes discussed which I thought were worth calling out: Running tests is important to calibrate MMM, especially when media channels tend to run at the same time. Geo-experiments are your gold standard in testing. Quality of data inputs into MMM will always be one of the most important objectives. Think about the frequency of your data as often more granular can help to get to better outcomes. Also make sure you've captured everything that will explain your sales over time. Attention drives outcomes. Ads that score higher on attention, get higher click through rates. People don't like advertising and don't pay it a lot of notice, so sometimes it helps to show them the same ad a few times to get it to cut through, a frequency of 3-4 is optimal. And a nice reminder that in the current world of privacy regulations and cookie deprecation, more people are looking to MMM to help with their measurement, captured here nicely by google searches 😀

A great experience from the Marketing Academy UK this week hearing from Accenture Song on their Life Trends 2025 report. I really enjoyed the discussion and getting to meet some exceptional Marketing leaders in the UK, now I have returned from Oz. The content covered 5 key trends across three key themes: 1. People are rebalancing key behaviors, shifting their priorities and figuring out how to meet their own needs in a technology-dominated world. 2. Important evolutions in online interactions, parenting, work, life goals and how people choose to spend their time will affect businesses and brands. 3. New technologies including generative AI have a role to play—and questions remain on what shape that role should and will take. Take a look!

Tricky to get into, fairly good chances of promotion, average pay and poor retention of staff. That's The Economist's view of working for WPP in their recent "best British companies to work for to get ahead" report. Is this a judgement on WPP or the wider marketing and communications industry? I sense it's the latter. We know from industry censuses that our industry has to do better on mental health, gender equality, parental support, age related inclusivity and class participation. That said, my experience in the industry has been highly positive. It's been hard work, but also incredibly rewarding, giving me the opportunity to do work I'm proud of for amazing brands in many different sectors. I've been lucky enough to learn, grow and lead surrounded by supportive and talented people - which is all I could hope for. For me this highlights the importance of the ongoing work to improve access to and better support people through the industry - especially at a time where views on ED&I initiatives are changing. https://lnkd.in/e9pi-ZAD

It appears that marketing budgets are tight out there, given requests such as: "Our data requirement has grown and our budget has shrunk so you’re going to have to work hard to get the business." "What's the cost for half of the Post-holder contacts?" and even "What's the cost for a quarter....?" Reflecting on The AI Summit London last week, two key themes stood out - the need for transparency, and how we will maintain the human element in our work with generative AI. I was especially enthralled by a talk on how audiences are adapting to Generative AI, led by the BBC's renuka gupta and Ipsos' Katherine Jameson Armstrong, who broke down their new joint research which revealed an unprecedented existential crisis among audiences. While audiences recognise the value AI can bring, there's concern over losing human touch and control, so are demanding transparency, human oversight, and accountability from AI users. Fascinating to hear that people are open to low-stakes applications of AI for convenience and entertainment, but draw a firm line at high-stakes uses that seem to undermine human creativity and skill. So, fake human newsreaders, no. But, cats reading the news – yes! As to how we maintain our humanity as we increasingly partner with AI, it was clear that questions remain over the balance of automation; a few speakers across the event warned how too much automation can strip the cognitive engagement that makes work fulfilling. Successful AI strategies will hinge on human-AI collaboration that augments human capabilities without replacing them. More than one speaker highlighted that the most successful businesses going forward - especially in the more creative industries - will be the ones with an "experimental culture" at their core. Today, the UK’s APP Fraud Reimbursement Rule comes into force. The UK's Payment Systems Regulator has introduced #fraud reimbursement scheme for UK banks and #payment firms. It is in response to rising fraud cases, which cost British residents approx. £330 million in 2023. The specifics of the new rule have sparked questions... ❓ Should #fintechs and banks be responsible for reimbursing fraud victims if the scam did not originate on their platform? 💷 Should consumers need to pay a £100 fee when settling fraud charges? 📱 Should an onus of responsibility (and action) lie with social media platforms to detect fraud and protect consumers? Such regulation is warranted to protect consumers. Yet with the payments sector a key enabler of fintech growth in the UK, the bigger question is whether such regulation will protect consumers, prevent fraud and promote the ongoing expansion of the sector? https://lnkd.in/e26889HX
