Chocolate Makers of York

About us

Originally opened in 2011, we created the York Cocoa House as an emporium of chocolate where we invited our visitors to join us to discover the magic and mystery of chocolate in a celebration of York's proud and illustrious chocolate making heritage in a beautifully quaint location. Our vision was always to celebrate real chocolate making, to learn from York's original chocolate makers and confectioners and to follow in their footsteps. In 2018 we opened York Cocoa Works, our purpose built chocolate manufactory in the heart of the city, where we now manufacture our chocolate from outstanding cocoa ingredients. At the end of 2018 we completed our move in to our chocolate making facility, opening our Cocoa Academy and welcoming visitors to join our tours and courses. At York Cocoa Works our visitors are invited to indulge in and discover every stage of the production process, you can; purchase our own hand made chocolates, meet our chocolatiers and see our products being made and learn hints and tips, play with chocolate and make their own indulgent treat or attend a workshop or master class and learn how to successfully work with chocolate themselves. At York Cocoa House we believe in sharing our passion and love of chocolate with our customers, with fellow businesses, education in schools, working with clients for private orders as well as consulting on research projects, historical interpretation, economic development, industry management and product development within the chocolate industry or application of chocolate in your own products. Our work and collaborations to date have been innovative and impactful investments for our clients, be it supporting them for application testing, research, client development or marketing and early stage prototype design. Of course our work is in the strictest confidence, but we are delighted to be confident that we can assist with any chocolate process and application need you may have

  • We’re incredibly proud to share our founder Sophie Jewett has been named in the list of top 10 most influential people in the world of cocoa and chocolate by Tony Myers From The Desk of CocoaRadar. Representing hundreds of independent and artisan chocolate makers now across the world that are changing and challenging the historic face of cocoa and chocolate production. We’re very proud of this recognition, not least because everyone in our sector works so hard every day to make better chocolate and push the tide of mass consumption in a different direction. For our sector to be recognised as playing a role in the dynamics of the industry is an exciting step change that we hope we can all keep driving. Please keep buying and supporting independent and transparent chocolate production this Christmas. “York Cocoa Works has become a cornerstone of the local community and a celebrated destination for chocolate lovers worldwide. Through her work, she continues to inspire appreciation for craftsmanship and sustainable business practices in the chocolate industry - and is helping keep York’s proud and rich chocolate-making heritage alive. By sourcing cocoa beans directly from farmers, York Cocoa Works emphasizes transparency and sustainability, ensuring high-quality ingredients and fair trading practices. Jewett makes our list to represent all the small & independent chocolate producers and to highlight their passion and commitment while operating in a challenging financial environment.” https://lnkd.in/eppkzMYj

  • We think good chocolate shouldn’t cost the earth! How can the things we enjoy taste good if they don’t do good? It’s been a long process but one always at the heart of the decisions we make and the products we share. If it’s not better we don’t make it!

Why can’t things be naughty and nice? Does it have to be a choice? For years I have loved and hated this time of year, loved being able to make and share chocolates and see the affect and power it is able to have in its connection, but hate the waste and the excessive amounts of packaging and wrapping needed to make something special stand out. We’ve spent many years working with our suppliers to find and implement better solutions so we can create our chocolate gifts to have the best impacts possible! We’ve done this by conscientiously removing all unnecessary layers of materials, removing all plastics from our packaging, shifting to food grade paper based materials that are bio-degradable or can be recycled in house-hold waste. Our bags, we use are a starch based see-through material, and if we use ribbon it’s a great product made from bamboo. We are always looking for better solutions so our chocolate can be as good as it tastes, so the things we indulge in don’t cost the earth! We’re always learning and it’s great to see these solutions having sufficient traction now that they are not so prohibitive for us to work with and share. We still pay 50% - 80% more in some instances. But we believe thats why we’re here and why you trust us. Thank you to our great UK based suppliers who have driven these solutions to help us in our process. @meridianpackaging @transpack_packaging @tinyboxcompany @incdotprint @aalabels @keylinkltd @jamopackagingsolutions

  • Happy December!!! Is anyone else not fully ready for Christmas yet? We’re loving the Christmas Market, the mince pies, the twinkly lights and the hot chocolate but not entirely ready for full on festive just yet. Rumour has it you might find our truffles on the TV this morning. We’re all busy making, packing and serving today so do let us know if you spot them! Our Elect Truffles are our range of classic White, Milk and Dark Chocolate Truffles - they’ve been named after the classic range of cocoa once crafted by Rowntree using fine cocoa. When Henry Isaac Rowntree first started making chocolate on Castlegate nearly 170 years ago he used fine cocoa beans to create a nutritious drink for the whole family and crafting Electories - sweetened, compounded cocoa to serve as medicines. Once renowned for its rich, high quality, Rowntree’s Elect Cocoa became known around the world. Our Classic Collection of Chocolate Truffles is a tribute to one of the world’s pioneering chocolate makers who has inspired our chocolate journey. #yorkchristmasmarket #YorkChocolate #YorkCocoaWorks #MadeInYork #VisitYork #alantitchmarsh
