Addressing this imbalance isn’t just the right thing to do ethically. Data shows that everything from workplace satisfaction, to business profitability significantly improve when an organisation strives for greater diversity and inclusivity. Women in Data® plays a key role in driving for more accurate representation wherever data is being gathered and analysed. We provide the platform that allows professionals at all levels to share their knowledge and experience, while working alongside businesses to help them embrace and develop the enormous advantages generated by diversity. The changes we’re affecting are cultural and systemic. Offering everything from professional networking and knowledge transfer, to our Women’s Health Commission, Women’s Safety Commission, MenopauseX and Girls in Data initiative. Our work is creating measurable impact for the partners we support and the community we host.

Do it scared! Navigating life with anxiety is challenging—but networking with anxiety? Phew! 😮💨 Yesterday, I attended the Women in Data® 10 year birthday bash x Expedia Group. It was an incredible experience meeting like-minded individuals and connecting with some truly inspiring women in data. This event was a significant milestone for me, and I’d like to give a special thank you to Livi Arnold, Nicole Otieno & Henrietta Sauleek whose kindness and support made the experience so much easier. The WiD team does an amazing job of creating a safe space for women like me to feel empowered. The panel was nothing short of inspirational. Hearing their journeys and insights gave me a glimpse of where I see myself in the future. It’s comforting and motivating having such incredible role models to look up to. Ayo Taiwo, Ella Ovenden, Katherine Church & Bhagya Reddy It was a pleasure meeting everyone at the event! I can’t wait to continue building these connections and growing in this community. It was a pleasure to attend the Acxiom UK offices yesterday with Claudia Noto and Tom Dales as part of the Women in Data®10th birthday celebrations! The panel discussion was angled around “𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘌𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘐’𝘴 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘢’𝘴 𝘗𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳” which highlighted some thought-provoking themes around diversity, allyship and bias. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: •𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆: Bad data in, bad data out – LLMs are only as good as their data input. If the data is already biased, this will amplify inequalities and isn’t reflective of wider society. •𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗮𝘀 – by having diverse people in the room, they are able to question what is assumed to be fact and consider perspectives that non-minority groups may have never had to, appealing to wider audiences. •𝗔𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 – due to the longstanding disparity between men and women in the industry, there is a need to propel women forward in order to reach an equitable point. •𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 – It's not enough to simply hire more women and minority groups if the working environment is not supportive and inclusive. •𝗔𝗹𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 – Male allies are key in advancing the workplace culture around gender diversity. Modelling inclusive behaviour and using your influence to elevate the experience of underrepresented colleagues makes a huge difference. •“𝗟𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗯” - as women are moving up the ladder and making strides in male-dominated fields, we can make the journey easier for the women around us by uplifting them and making room for their voices. At FDM, diversity is in the fabric of what we do. From collaborating with schools to educate younger generations on careers in tech, all the way up to our Returners programme which is focussed on reintegrating those who may have had a career break back into the workforce; we’re proud to actively support women throughout all stages of their career journey. I recently attended the 10th anniversary celebration of Women in Data® at our office, and I can honestly say it was one of the most inspiring events I’ve been part of. Being in a room filled with accomplished, driven women from across the data and tech world was an empowering experience. I got to hear incredible stories from Elizabeth Harris , Rachel Purchase and Leanne Smith about their career journeys—each one a reminder that growth often comes from navigating challenges and embracing the unexpected. Some thoughts that have stayed with me: 💁🏻♀️💡 Your career doesn’t have to follow a straight path. Growth often comes in ways you don’t expect. 💁🏻♀️💡 We all have a role to play in shaping the future of data. Whether you’re solving complex problems, mentoring others, or building tools that make a difference, every contribution matters. 💁🏻♀️💡 Connections are everything. There’s something so powerful about being part of a network that supports and uplifts each other. I left feeling so grateful to be surrounded by a community that values innovation and inclusion. 🥂 Went to the great Women in Data® event with Boots UK at University of Nottingham to celebrate their 10th birthday yesterday 🥂 What an event! I met some fabulously interesting people and there were lots of insightful speakers. As per most events I've been to this year there has been a lot of discussion of AI. Largely (possibly surprisingly to some) it is boiling down to that we need good data quality and governance. Is anyone shocked women are leading the way in AI ethics? Lexy Kassan: Data is biased. Period. Elise Walker & Paula Bobbett shared their insights as senior leaders in data & tech at Boots. We heard about how matching retail and health data can support using data for good with clinical trials on women's health with Emma Eatch & others. Maybe we can reduce the average diagnosis time for endometriosis down from *8 years*. Plus a great conversation with Elizabeth Dolan on her PhD in this area and explainability of machine learning models. No7 Beauty Company shared part of their research and that my skin is currently only 1/5 for hydration. There was a plug for University of Nottingham's apprenticeship scheme for Data Science. One of the best talks came from Sophie Clapp, the Company Archivist at Boots! Florence Boot was a force to be reckoned with over 100 years ago and a strong woman in business. 🌟 Reflections from the Women in Data UK Event: Insights for Data and Business Leaders 🌟 Earlier this week, I had the privilege of attending an event hosted by Women in Data® and their brand partner, Acxiom. Kara Osborne Gladwell , Lisa Andreou, Eisha Bhargava and Cali Wood shared invaluable lessons at the intersection of data, AI, and business strategy. These insights are vital for both data professionals and business leaders aiming to drive impactful, ethical, and inclusive innovation: 📊 Ethics, Privacy & Data Quality: • The success of AI depends on data quality, accessibility, and ethical governance. Poor data doesn’t just limit insights—it can perpetuate societal biases and erode trust in technology. • Companies like AXA stressed aligning AI with strategic business goals, developing clear use cases, and working closely with stakeholders to address their needs. 🤖 AI, Human Ingenuity & Diversity: • The real power lies in the combination of human ingenuity and AI. As we democratize data, we must address biases and build solutions with diverse teams to deliver better outcomes. • A great example? When Alexa’s early development team lacked diversity, the product struggled to understand women, children, and the elderly. Inclusive teams create stronger products and results. 📣 Leadership, Inclusion & Allyship: • Diversity and allyship were key themes. Strong allies—especially in leadership—don’t just support talent but actively advocate and challenge them to grow. • Leaders must embrace the principle of “lift as you climb,” championing others while driving their own success. 🧠 Skills for a Changing Landscape: • As AI evolves, the focus is shifting from technical skills alone to creativity, collaboration, and storytelling with data. These are the skills that unlock business impact. • Pro tip: Tailor your communication to emphasize these strengths, and learn from those who excel at influence and strategic thinking in your organization.
