Have you heard of the term “intangible assets”? In The 100 Year Life, Lynda Gratton and Andrew J Scott describe 3 types: #1 - Productive assets: Things like your skills and your knowledge, um, that you use and need to do your job. #2 - Vitality assets: Your wellbeing, your physical and mental health, your social connections, and your connections with your family. #3 Transformational assets: Your knowledge and understanding of yourself, but also an outward focus on looking out and thinking - what else could I do? This third group are absolutely key to a multi-stage career. Listen to this week’s podcast to hear Lois Brand and Dr Rachel Morris explore how to take a long, hard look at your career - and top tips on how to craft a life and career you really love. https://lnkd.in/eMPTvXjV #MedicalProfessionals #CareerDevelopment

As medics, we often feel expected to simply follow a predetermined path when it comes to our careers. (Best comment on a recent episode about preventing burnout in the earliest stages >> “catch yourself when making A level choices!!”) But what if your career path - and your happiness - isn’t something you locked in back at the start of your working life? This week's podcast with Dr. Lois Brand explores a crucial truth: Your career development is in your hands. We discuss: 📍Why proactive career planning is a skill all of us need these days 📍Managing rapid changes in medical practice and in our lives 📍Strategies for professional growth beyond traditional routes Click here to watch the full episode and find out how you can take the first step towards career change: https://lnkd.in/eMPTvXjV #MedicalProfessionals #CareerDevelopment

If you’re in a high-stress, high-stakes role, you might be the sort of person who prides themselves on just “keeping going” - even when things start to feel like too much. Sometimes it feels as though admitting you’re feeling stressed will be a slippery slope to not coping at all. Better to grit your teeth and carry on, right? The truth is, it’s FAR easier to prevent burnout early on, than to recover from it when you’re there. This is your friendly festive reminder that if you’re showing signs of burnout - and deep down, you know you can’t keep going the way you have - it’s FAR better to stop and get help NOW than let it get worse. I explain some of the first signs to watch out for in this week’s podcast episode: https://lnkd.in/dSjQSEG8 #PreventBurnout #RecognizeTheSigns #HealthcareResilience #StressAwareness #MentalHealthInHealthcare #SelfCareForDoctors #BurnoutPrevention #PhysicianSupport #HighStakesCare #HealthcareWellbeing

I’ve been working on a new theory about burnout, and the way it progresses from “just stressed out” to “fully burned out”. Based on my experience, and others I’ve spoken to, burnout isn’t a straightforward, linear process. You can keep going for ages - and then it all spirals very quickly. In this week’s podcast episode I explore what tiny warning signs we often ignore and how we can address stress at the right point - before our performance is impacted or, worse still, we head into burnout. Have you burned out before? Looking back, what do you now realise were your warning signs? Listen to this week’s episode and let me know your thoughts: https://lnkd.in/dSjQSEG8 #BurnoutAwareness #RecognizeTheSigns #PreventBurnout #MentalHealthMatters #StressManagement #HealthcareResilience #SelfCareInHealthcare #HealthcareWellbeing #PhysicianSupport #OvercomingBurnout

NEW PODCAST: How to catch stress early before you spiral into burnout It’s easy to think stress is a normal part of life, especially if you work in healthcare. But this way of thinking actually puts you at risk of burnout. You end up tolerating long-term distress and ignoring the early warning signs. And the closer you get to burnout, the harder it is to recover and return to optimal performance. Find out what signs to look out for, and how to know exactly what to do, in today’s episode: https://lnkd.in/dSjQSEG8 #HealthcareTransitions #LifeAfterMedicine #CareerReflection #EmbraceImperfection #DecisionMaking #HealthcareWellbeing #SelfCompassion #PhysicianSupport #RethinkYourPath #HealthcareResilience

This week on the podcast I shared the vulnerable truth about how I felt when I stopped practising medicine 🙈 I’m sharing this in case you’re also giving yourself a hard time about a decision you’ve made in the past. Feeling shame about a “mistake” or regretting a path you took. Now I’m learning a FAR more helpful approach to making decisions. One which doesn’t break things into “right” or “wrong” - but acknowledges the messy, imperfect business of being human, and allows me to figure out what works along the way. Let me know if this helps you too.
