🚀 Success in Microgravity! I am delighted to share the successful demonstration of Lugh X-1p during the 85th ESA Parabolic Flight Campaign (28 October - 8 November 2024). This experiment testing two new In-Space Manufacturing (ISM) technologies enabling Europe’s independent access to ISM, addressing key challenges associated with microgravity operations. The technologies tested during this campaign contribute to the development of a sustainable and reliable space segment, supporting future recycling and upcycling capabilities in orbit. I am immensely grateful for the support and contributions that made this achievement possible: The Royal Academy of Engineering, through Prof. Colin McInnes’ Chair of Emerging Technologies. The EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) and Glasgow Knowledge Exchange Fund at the University of Glasgow that trusted me to lead this ambitious project. Big thanks to Keith Dingwall, Gordon Meiklejohn, and Steffan Gwyn. The European Space Agency - ESA for accommodating us within this flight campaign, and to Neil Melville for his invaluable support throughout the process as well as Advenit Makaya and Ugo Lafont, Dr. for being supporters of the technology demonstration. Novespace, particularly Thomas Villatte, for their expertise during preparation and flights. A special thanks to Satyam Bhatti, Colin McInnes and James Beeley for their dedication and teamwork, which ensured the success of the campaign. Thank you Colin and Satyam for also flying with me. Finally, I want to express our heartfelt appreciation to the wider University of Glasgow staff who contributed to this project in countless ways and made it possible. To commemorate their efforts, I’ve created a short video taken during the flight featuring the free floating polymer granular material, accompanied by a tribute plate with their names. With these validated technologies, we aim to drive Europe’s ambitions in In-Space Manufacturing (ISM), advancing sustainable and autonomous space operations. NEW EVENT📢 Photonics for Space: Special Interest Group | Tuesday 3 December | 1000 - 1130 | Glasgow. This meeting of the Photonics for Space SIG will be hosted by the new West of Scotland Space Cluster. Co-chair of the cluster and founder of Clyde Space, Craig Clark MBE, will provide an overview of the regional space cluster’s capabilities across a number of areas and information on the cluster's strategic focus and ambitions. We will also be joined by Heather Anderson, who represents ADS Scotland on the cluster advisory group, and Ross Methven from University of Strathclyde Major Projects team who led on the development of a £100m space sector bid into the Glasgow City Investment Zone process. Today at IAC2024, Spire Global COO Theresa Condor joined Lisa Campbell, President of the Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne, and Ewan Reid, Founder and CEO of Mission Control, to introduce the mission. As part of this mission, we’ll build and operate the LEMUR 6, a 6U satellite with an optical payload, providing images of Earth for real-time analysis using Mission Control’s AI platform, SpacefarerAI™.
