The Welsh Ambulance Service has introduced a new process to improve outcomes for 999 callers and deliver a safer service. Paramedics and nurses in our control room will now undertake a rapid clinical review of most 999 calls to ensure patients get the most appropriate help. Those whose condition is immediately life-threatening will continue to be sent an emergency ambulance on lights and sirens as quickly as possible so that highly skilled clinicians can deliver life-saving interventions at the scene. Callers whose condition is not as time-sensitive will be further triaged by control room clinicians, who will identify the most appropriate response for their needs. Thirty clinical navigators have been appointed to run the new service from our clinical contact centres in St Asaph, Carmarthen and Cwmbran. Pete Brown, Assistant Director of Operations, said: “Winter is a busy time for the NHS with seasonal illnesses and cold weather putting more pressure on an already over-stretched system. “This means a poor patient experience, not to mention frustration for our people, who are not able to help the community as quickly as they would like. “Rapid clinical screening enables highly skilled paramedics and nurses to apply their critical thinking in a control room environment in a brand new ‘clinical navigator’ role, ensuring that those in most urgent need of help, get it.” Full story 👉 https://lnkd.in/e4RSk2B4

An ambulance crew who were assaulted by a patient before she urinated in front of them are making a plea to the public to treat them with respect. Ian Jones and Gareth Casey were treating a female who had fallen in the street, before she became verbally and physically abusive. Gareth said: “The punches didn’t hurt – it was her threats to kill which shocked me more. “As emergency workers, we should be able to go to work and come home unscathed.” Ian, who is ex-military, added: “It was the first and only time I’ve pressed the ‘panic strip’ in the ambulance. “We were more frustrated by the fact the ambulance had to be taken out of service for a deep clean, which meant it wasn’t available for other patients whose condition could have been life or death. “We were there to help someone in their hour of need, and that’s how we were repaid.” Meanwhile, new data has revealed that assaults on Welsh emergency workers have increased. More than 3,000 assaults were committed in the 12 months to June 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of nine per cent. They included kicking, slapping, spitting, biting, head-butting and verbal abuse, and ranged from common assault to serious premediated attacks involving grievous bodily harm. ✈️💚Cardiac arrest survivor thanks ‘air-mazing’ airport lifesavers #AppreciationPost Alice Mogford had just landed at Cardiff Airport from a trip to Belfast when she collapsed in the arrivals hall and stopped breathing. Quick-thinking airport staff started the 'chain of survival' by giving CPR and shocking Alice with a defibrillator prior to the arrival of #TeamWAST crews. Alice said: “I’d like to relay my sincere thanks to everyone involved in saving my life. “I know now that the survival rate for cardiac arrests is really low, so I guess I was in the right place at the right time. “I get how the general public would freeze in that situation, but having lived through this first-hand, my message is that you can’t possibly do more damage, so give CPR a go.” Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/eTsDf9RW

Introducing our new initiative to help people in a mental health crisis. 👇 Our mental health response vehicle provides specialist assessment, care and support for people with a mental health emergency who call 999 and require a face-to-face response. A senior mental health clinician and emergency medical technician work together to treat a patient’s mental health and physical needs, providing a holistic approach to care. Simon Amphlett, the Trust’s Specialist Clinical Lead for Mental Health, said: “Nearly all mental health calls to 999 are for or from someone in a crisis. “Many of these people will have thoughts of suicide or self-harm, and some will have acted on these thoughts. “Additionally, callers to 999 will be calling about a physical health issue but may also have a mental health condition that needs urgent consideration as a part of their care. “All of this means that we must respond holistically to people in crisis and requires us to work in an integrated way to meet the needs of callers. “This dedicated resource for people with very specific needs requiring emergency care helps puts us firmly on that path.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e-RtpVtJ #MentalHealth #WelshAmbulance #TeamWAST
