It's been 10 years since the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) launched Cyber Essentials – a scheme that helps businesses strengthen their cyber security and get accreditation for it – per a recent NCSC blog.* Following this launch, the NCSC also added another, higher, tier to the scheme – Cyber Essentials Plus, which we're accredited in. But why should this matter to your organisation? It's simple: it can help you boost your cyber security and importantly, show your customers through independent accreditation that you're taking their cyber security seriously. When we talk about helping our customers with their cyber security, it can conjure up images of everything being computer based – for example people in front of screens setting up firewalls. While it's true that's involved, we go way beyond this to consider our customers' physical security – e.g. how people get into your premises – so a more fitting term is that we help with customers' information security. Below is a good example of what we mean by this – physical theft of mobile phones. For us, this would be the kind of thing we would address when looking at risks to your employees' devices, and we'd help with policies to respond in case of such thefts. Becoming more cyber resilient can help drive down insurance costs, finds two new studies. As covered here by IT Pro, the insurance broker behind the first study – Howden – described 2020 and 2021 as having "surging ransomware claims" that have now given way to more "favourable dynamics" and falling costs of cyber insurance. With the second study, Sophos found that company revenue had "minimal impact on whether or not a business takes out cyber insurance", suggesting companies both big and small see the value of cover. And notably, the majority of organisations in that second study said improving their cyber defences helped them qualify for cyber insurance, and get it at a lower price.
