The October Budget was not particularly kind to employers, with the cost of employer national insurance contributions (NICs) going up substantially from April 2025, combined with inflation-busting increases to the National Living/Minimum Wage. From 6 April 2025, the rate of employer NICs will increase from 13.8% to 15%, and the starting annual threshold will be lower at £5,000 (it is currently £9,100). Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ first Budget was a significant one in all senses. “…this Budget delivers a large, sustained increase in spending, taxation, and borrowing.” So said the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) in the first paragraph of its overview of the Autumn Budget. In our recent article, we take a further look into this. Click the link below to read more. https://lnkd.in/dWSm8HCq #budget #budgetnews #businessnews

Jargon busting! This month, we are going to tell you all about: Deferred Tax Liabilities and Assets. These are temporary differences between the tax base of an asset or liability and its carrying amount in the financial statements. A deferred tax liability arises when taxable income is lower than accounting income now, but the company expects to pay more tax in the future. This requires an understanding of both tax laws and timing differences in financial reporting, making it fairly complex to get your head around! #jargonbusting #accountingjargon #jargon

Business rates relief has been extended for the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors but, with the rate of discount cut from 75% to 40%, many English businesses will face a near doubling of their rates bill for 2025/26. Fun fact of the month! Did you know that in the 18th century, tea was so valuable in the UK that customs and excise auditors were specially trained to calculate tea import duties. An auditor's skills were crucial in preventing smuggling and fraud. You really do learn something new every day! #tea #funfact #funfactofthemonth #accountingfacts
