Giving Back! My first ever pre reg trainee was Fatema Kanani twenty years ago. The most recent was David Beta - he qualified just under a month ago. There have been many in between- I’m not mentioning names in fear of missing someone. Furthermore, I have the pleasure of being a Personal Development Tutor where I can support trainees from other stores to assist them in their journey as a pre reg Optometrist. Each and every pre reg I have supervised has been an exceptionally rewarding journey watching the trainee evolve personally and professionally. The bond made with each trainee lasts and a sense of pride beams through me when I see them excel. Many Optometrists are so reluctant or anxious to supervise. I would wholeheartedly encourage you to take on a trainee and give back to the profession what someone once gave you - the chance to grow. I can honestly say I wouldn’t be the Optometrist I am today without having supervised so many pre- regs. I have learnt something or adapted my practice with each trainee. I have a sense of pride working with four residents in my store now that were once my pre regs David Beta @ghadeeralbarrak @amirhussein and Riya Patel. Riya is a pre reg supervisor herself now and co-supervised David. Being a pre-reg supervisor is a journey of self development as much as developing the trainee. Communication skills, mentoring, empathy, offering support and managing different personalities are all skills that grow though supervision. So, if you are thinking about supervising- go for it! If you aren’t thinking about it? Why not? I am happy to answer any questions you may have if it helps you to feel confident supervising. Let’s give back … Back to David Beta - it’s been an absolute pleasure working with you as an OA. The quiet David. I managed to crack you with my crazy energy and even managed to make you lose that David composure to laugh out loud! I am extremely proud of the Optometrist you have become and can’t wait to see how your journey progresses! It will be a great honour to work alongside you and the others as a professional colleague. It lasts for five days, is one of the most colourful and vibrant festivals in the world and is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. Diwali means 'row of lights' 🔥🔥🔥🔥 in Sanskrit, and the festival symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
