Tutor The Nation PLUS Skills Session: Business problems in volunteer retention We had a great afternoon yesterday, with Sophia Taglio from Tutor The Nation coming in to host a Skills Session for our PLUS Award students. The Bristol PLUS Award is the University of Bristol's Employability Award, giving students formal recognition for the development of their employability skills over the duration of their degree. This session focused on solving issues of volunteer retention at Tutor The Nation and saw groups of students come together and work with new people to research, problem solve and deliver a presentation to their peers. It was a great opportunity for students to strengthen some key skills in teamwork, communication and building healthy relationships. We were pretty amazed by the innovation shown when it came to the ideas students presented and by the standard of the teams pitches. Each team managed to find a unique angle, presenting ideas that piqued the interest of Sophia including: Gamification and incentivisation Robust skills development for experienced volunteers Viable and scalable opportunities for personalisation Embedding the Psychological Theory of Self-Actualization These ideas all centred the tutees in the solutions whilst prioritising the value of the volunteers, understanding this as crucial for retention and consequently, good quality education. We must extend a massive thank you to Sophia, who ran such an engaging session. It was great to see lots of new relationships formed both peer to peer but also between students and the organisation🎉 #TutorTheNation #BristolPLUSAward #UniversityofBristol #SkillsSession #EndorsingOrganisation
