The Grocer reports on Unilever’s £40 million investment in our Burton foods factory. The investment has resulted in a 13% increase in total factory efficiency and doubled production volumes at the site in the last three years. Could this be the crop of the future? Unilever is investing in an industry-first biotech partnership with Nufarm, a global agriculture innovator, to identify alternative, plant-based cleaning ingredients. The aim is to develop a new variety of a crop called energy cane – a type of sugar cane – which can produce sustainable oils. This will be a source of fatty acids, a core ingredient in our cleaning products. If successful, this could reduce our reliance on petrochemical-based ingredients and support our ambition to deliver net zero emissions across our value chain.
