🚀 We are thrilled to announce that the Fintech in Wales Annual Report 2023/24 is now live! Published annually since 2021, the report provides an in-depth overview of the fintech sector in Wales. The Benefits that matter the most to Software Engineers...... 👉 Annual Leave: Minimum of 25 days + bank hols, Christmas, and birthday. 30+ is ideal. A holiday buy back scheme is a good idea to provide flexibility. 👉 Pension package: Ideally a healthy employer contribution (above statutory), and a low employee 👉 Private Health: For the family too, or family at a reduced rate as a minimum. 👉 Flexible working patterns & work from home: Work-life balance is key, especially for people with families. Providing Engineers with grown up working environments and patterns is key. Although we’ve seen a surge in back to office expectations, the best tech talent is still looking for flexibility to work from home, with minimal office time (ideally once a week or bi-weekly onsite maximum). If office time is a must, then car parking spaces are preferred. 👉 Training budget: £250 to buy a load of glossy books that’ll gather dust on the shelf isn’t going to cut it. We need a big enough budget for conferences/events and certifications and licenses for preferential tooling like Copilot/JetBrains. Conference/event budget separate from a training budget is also preferable. The option for a conference with an over night stay and food etc, perhaps one or two per annum. Nice to have’s: 👉 Bonus: You’d think this would be right up there but to be brutally honest, Engineers would prefer the extra salary bump from the start. Bonusses can be unclear or considered a pipe dream depending on what time of year you join. Bonusses can also lead to resentment or demotivation if over promised and under delivered. Providing clear examples and figure projections are a good idea however it’s still a challenge for people to see this as a tangible incentive that would be the difference between another offer. 👉 Development plan: Quite close to a priority this one, but the IMO this kind of thing should be part of the role and company culture and not a benefit as such. Although companies are faring better than others if they provide a clear dev/progression plan or a matrix or are open from the start in terms of the Engineer having the buy-in/backing to lead their own path and journey. Having a strong, visible plan in pace for Engineers at every level is essential. 👉 EV Car scheme: Very common these days and is 100% considered as a benefit, but not quite a priority. There are so many fluffy perks flying about the market, but these are the things that really matter to Engineers! Building out an attractive benefits package can be challenging, I get that. It's also important to consider where a business is in their journey - Startup, SME, or Enterprise brand etc. Wherever you may be in your journey, you can compete 💪 If you’re a business owner, Lead, HR/TA looking for insights into building out an attractive benefits package then I can help you.
