"We will undercut your current agency by 50%" WHHHATTTTT????? YES, this was really said to a client in order to get a candidate in for an interview! One of our candidates we had submitted for a role was called by another agency about a role, who, by the way, had not been given the role to work on but must have seen an ad for the role. This "agency" then called up the client and said "you do not know me, but I have the perfect candidate for the role you are recruiting for" Who trained this consultant to start a conversation in this way????!!!!! The client then says "we have already received this candidate through the agency we are using and have engaged with"! The so called agency then says " we will undercut the agency if you go through us" - REALLY?????? The client subsequently told me the whole story and was laughing as a) he had never spoken to this company or person before and b) had the ordacity to undercut by 50% YES 50% in order to get the client to see this candidate through them! I mean I know things have got a little slower but this is just incredible! Obviously the client turned them away, but we had a laugh about it after my shock had subsided. The benefits of having great relationships with your clients is that you find out things like this! This kind of behaviour is what gives great recruiters a bad name! I just cannot believe that people will stoop so low in order to get an interview! What this does is completely devalue your worth as a consultant but moreover, makes you look desperate in the clients eyes. If you can say and do this to a client you have never spoken to before, what kind of reputation will you be building for yourself in the market? How will clients trust you EVER? If you want to work with a trustworthy business that will not backstab and try to undercut just to win business then call me!
