The minimum wage will increase in April to £12.21 per hour for those over 21, £10 for 18-20-year-olds, and £7.55 for apprentices, a move supporting workers' financial security amid high living costs. This rise aligns with Labour's aim for a true living wage, benefiting both employees and the economy by boosting consumer spending and community investment. TUC's Paul Nowak notes that wage increases have consistently supported employment stability rather than causing job losses. However, the increase remains modest relative to rising expenses, especially for young workers. Employers should not let this prevent wage growth for those above the minimum wage. Further action is needed to achieve a true living wage, ensuring fair and equitable pay across the UK. #security #protection #safety #professionalsecurityofficers #livingwage #minimumwage

It's brilliant to see security companies implementing such brilliant apps such as WageStream in order to help their employees manage emergency and other such situations 👏🏼
It’s #TalkMoneyWeek, and I wanted to say how proud I am of our partner Wagestream for supporting our 5,000+ frontline family members. Carlisle, many years back now, were the first large scale FM business to implement the app which offers employees the opportunity to access a percentage of their wages before payday. This allows our employees vital headroom to deal with unexpected financial challenges mid-month; and removes risks of them having to go to vicious pay day loans companies. Moreso I was pleasantly surprised to learn that in recent times our employees have also saved over £1m via the savings function on the app, where they can divert a percentage of their earnings each month. Whilst we were the first, I am pleased to see Wagestream on many of our competitor’s offerings now as well. Well done to Peter and the Wagestream team for your support and approach. Maybe we will soon see many of the large Security and FM companies, like Carlisle, publcially remove any reliance on Subcontracting, which ultimately increases the risks for employees in the supply chain to be exploited. It is even more saddening when you see that some of these companies are subcontracting for profit, by winning large contracts and then immediately subcontracting the roles out at up to 25% profit margins. I pose the view that if Carlisle can do this at c.£100m turnover then why other companies who are much bigger in size and scale choose to continue to subcontract for profit?

On this Remembrance Sunday, we pause to honour the brave individuals who served and sacrificed for our freedoms. Many of our members, veterans themselves or families of those who served, understand deeply the courage and resilience of our armed forces. Today, we remember those who gave everything, standing together in gratitude and respect. Let’s keep their legacy alive not just in words, but in our continued commitment to values of service, community, and support for all who protect and serve our nation. General Secretary, Daniel Garnham said, "We are committed to supporting our veterans and our members who have bravely served their country, which is why we have just joined the Armed Forces Covenant to put our commitment into action." Lest we forget. #remembrancesunday #remembrancesunday2024

Sadly, as a trade union official, I’ve regularly witnessed how unfair pay practices and a lack of reasonable adjustments trap Disabled workers in low-paid roles, regardless of their talent, experience, or dedication. In the security sector, I’ve seen qualified workers with disabilities repeatedly overlooked for higher-paying positions, simply because employers fail to accommodate or truly understand their needs. One security officer with ADHD, who had been with their company for years, recently told me, “I’m stuck in this entry level position because they say I can’t handle leadership. But I’ve been doing the job already—just without the title or pay.” In hospitality, a chef managing a chronic pain condition spoke up an about a past experience where he was denied proper support and kept in a low-paying role despite having the skills to move up. Their employer had claimed it wasn’t “practical” to offer reasonable adjustments. Instead, they gave the promotion to someone less experienced, leaving the Disabled worker undervalued and underpaid. This isn’t about capability; it’s about discrimination. The Disability Pay Gap persists because workplaces often fail to recognise the value Disabled workers bring. At UK Hospitality Union and Security Industry Federation Trade Union we call on the Government to: ➡ Mandate Disability Pay Gap reporting to expose unfair pay practices. ➡ Strengthen workplace protections to ensure reasonable adjustments are the standard, not an afterthought. ➡ Enforce equal pay for equal work, so Disabled workers are no longer left behind. Fair pay isn’t just about compliance—it’s about respect and inclusion. It’s time to ensure workplaces value everyone equally. Let’s close the gap. #Equality #DisabilityRights #EndThePayGap Satia Rai F.ISRM DIR.IPSA Daniel Garnham Richard Tydeman Richard Fogelman Siân Doherty MSyI Lauren Rook Karen Whybro Ruth R. Today is #DisabilityPayGap day. The day when Disabled workers stop getting paid for the rest of the year. Yet, life costs £1,010 more each month for Disabled households than non-disabled households. We are calling on the Government to END the Disability Pay Gap. ALT TEXT Image of a piece of bread with the middle ripped out. In the centre it says Disabled workers work 54 days for free. #DisabilityPayGap
