  • NTIA Says Government Drugs Policy in the UK is Dangerously Outdated Following the release of the report released by the Home Affairs Select Committee on Drugs and committee recommendations. Michael Kill, CEO of Night Time Industries Association, Calls for Urgent Modernisation of UK Government's Drug Policy Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) supports the recommendations within the Home Affairs Select Committee report released today, and has issued a strong call for the UK Government to address the dangerously outdated nature of the country's drug policy. The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, which forms the cornerstone of drug regulations in the UK, is now over 50 years old and ill-suited to the contemporary challenges posed by drug misuse and harm reduction. While the UK has long been a pioneer in the global music and entertainment scene, our approach to drug policy has lagged behind the progressive measures embraced by our European counterparts. Across the channel, countries have taken significant steps forward by integrating drug checking initiatives into festivals and cultural events. These programs, aimed at ensuring the safety of festivalgoers and reducing drug-related harm, have proven to be effective tools in minimising risks associated with substance misuse. Kill emphasises that the time has come for the UK to embrace a comprehensive reform of its drug policy. He states, "The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 has served its purpose, but the landscape has evolved dramatically since its enactment. Our European neighbours have taken proactive measures to address drug-related challenges, prioritising harm reduction and public safety. It is high time for the UK to catch up and adopt a more pragmatic and modern approach." • Today in UK Politics: Quick Updates - Westminster Today! The government has announced a £1bn funding boost for local councils to tackle homelessness. Deputy PM Angela Rayner says it gives councils the tools to act swiftly and support those in need, with Minister Rushanara Ali speaking about the initiative today. Reports suggest Sue Gray is set for a life peerage, along with 29 other Labour supporters, including former MPs like Thangam Debbonaire and Lyn Brown. MPs are increasingly focused on constituency issues, sparking concerns about their broader legislative effectiveness. Foreign Secretary David Lammy is in Brussels for a NATO meeting with President Zelenskyy, while Keir Starmer remains in London. Meanwhile, Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves is meeting ex-Dragon Theo Paphitis to discuss boosting UK economic growth. In Parliament today: PMQs, debates on BBC funding, terminal illness employment rights, and questions for Health Secretary Wes Streeting. #UKPolitics #Labour #Homelessness #Brexit

  • Good morning! Just a few days until the weekend.. and a moment to breath with family! Another busy day ahead, but there’s nothing better than starting it with purpose and drive. This morning, I’m connecting with Mick Gibb, my Australian counterpart, to dive into all things Night Time Economy and conference planning. With friends from the Southern Hemisphere joining us soon as part of a broader trade delegation, there’s plenty of exciting ground to cover. From there, the day picks up pace. I’ll be diving into internals and catching up with Mike King from X Base to discuss crypto, fiat currency, and how they’re shaping the future. Later, I’ll be meeting Sylvia Oates from Six Til Six, followed by recording a podcast with Ian Fox and Co., which I’ve been really looking forward to. As the day rolls on, there’s a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with Sarah McBriar from AVA, an interview with Natalie Terrell from Bath University, and a quick stop at ITV London for an update on challenges within London and the outcome of the Gaucho hearing. There’s always something new to learn and share in this ever-evolving space. The afternoon will bring more focus on and opportunity, with summit updates with Scarlett from Defected, a conversation with Kate Nicholls from UK Hospitality on security, and a wrap-up with the HOLBA team to talk about the West End. It’s going to be a full-on, fruitful day, and I couldn’t be more ready for it. Let’s get started! #NightTimeEconomy #Collaboration #NTE #DrivingChange #UKHospitality

  • How Will This Year End for the UK’s Night-Time Economy? Once again, businesses across Scotland are being shafted—this time over business rates. Westminster giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other. Promises of policy reform, planning improvements, and business rates re-evaluation are all well and good, but these are long-term fixes. What our industry desperately needs are short-term solutions to survive the here and now. Meanwhile, the UK government is touting its Devolution White Paper as a “once-in-a-generation” shift in power. The plan includes:
✔️ Merging district and county councils into unitary authorities for streamlined governance.
✔️ Expanding mayoral zones with enhanced powers over transport, housing, and taxation.
✔️ Enabling new councils to operate before their formal recognition in April 2027, aiming to save £2 billion.
✔️ Reserving ministerial powers to override local resistance to reforms. While Westminster focuses on long-term restructuring, the jobs crisis deepens. UK firms are cutting staff at levels not seen since the 2008 crash. Where is the immediate support our businesses need to keep doors open and staff employed? UK’s night-time industries can’t wait for “ambitious reforms” in five years—they need action now. 💡 How do we balance saving jobs today with planning for tomorrow? Join the conversation and let us know your thoughts below. 👇 #SupportLocal #NightTimeEconomy #BusinessRatesScandal #DevolutionDebate #ActionNow

  • Local will be the New National!!! - Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is stepping into the spotlight today while the PM is away — this isn’t about power grabs or reshuffles. Instead, Rayner is set to announce Labour’s bold plans for devolution in England, which could mark the biggest shake-up of local government in over 50 years. The Details Rayner will be in Leeds today, speaking to regional mayors, business leaders, and local government figures. A white paper outlining the full proposals will follow shortly after. Here’s a glimpse of what’s in store: **Simpler Local Democracy: Areas with two tiers of government (district and county councils) will be invited to merge into single, unitary authorities, creating streamlined governance for around 500,000 residents per authority. Expect this to save money and reduce bureaucracy — but not without controversy. **Mayoral Powers: Regional mayors could gain control over rail services, opening the door to London-style contactless travel and better local transport management. **E-Bike and E-Scooter Rules: Local authorities will get new powers to regulate bike hire schemes and tackle pavement clutter — a win for walkability and accessibility. **Planning Power Shift: Mayors will also be given greater influence over regional housing and infrastructure strategies. What’s Missing: Some mayors are disappointed fiscal powers like tourist taxes didn’t make the cut, leaving funding for improvements a challenge. Why It Matters Rayner’s announcement could transform how England’s regions are run, giving communities more control over local services and infrastructure. While the plans have sparked debate, even Tory Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen calls it a “real step in the right direction.” Stay tuned for more updates, and let us know: What would you like to see in a new era of local government? #Devolution #LocalGovernment #AngelaRayner #Labour

  • Night Time Industries Association – Update: Decarbonisation & Disruption The government has unveiled its Clean Power 2030 Action Plan — a bold and controversial roadmap to decarbonise 95% of Britain’s electricity grid by 2030. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is championing the plan, presenting it in Hull with Siemens turbine workers. Here’s what you need to know: 🔋 Big Moves in Clean Energy **Doubling onshore wind (to 27-29 GW) and tripling solar (to 45-47 GW). **Offshore wind increases to 43-50 GW, slightly short of Labour’s original pledge. 🌐 Grid Reforms: **Scrapping the “first-come-first-served” system to prioritise active projects over stalled ones. **New incentives for communities hosting clean energy infrastructure. 💼 Challenges Ahead: **£200bn private sector investment required. **Legal battles expected over grid reforms. 📉 Impact on Bills: While Labour’s campaign promised savings of up to £300 per family, the plan now highlights that actual savings will depend on market factors. This ambitious shift towards state intervention marks a once-in-a-generation moment for energy policy. It’s a high-stakes mission — let’s see if it delivers! #CleanPower2030 #SustainableEnergy #NightTimeEconomy
