Happy International Migrants Day! To mark the occasion, we want to share our latest work. This new report aims help practitioners understand the relevant research insights available and consider how to use them when communicating about climate-linked migration. How we communicate and frame climate-linked migration shapes public understanding, policy responses, and impacts the lives of those most at risk. Delve into our newest guide (link in comments) and learn how to navigate the research and use the insights for your work.

About us
We exist to challenge the lack of long-term strategies to support and protect people at risk of displacement linked to environmental change The UK Climate Change and Migration Coalition is an alliance of refugee, human rights, development and environmental organisations. We believe the rights of affected communities must be central to the discussion of how this issue is addressed. We want to make the voices of affected communities and civil society central to the debate.

We've just released our new report! ✨ We take a look at where current research is on communicating climate-linked migration. There is a long way to go, but we've pulled out our recommendations to help practitioners navigate the current and future research for their communications. Download the report and join us for our webinar later today 👇
📣 New report! ‘Communicating climate change and migration: A user's guide to navigating the research’ How we communicate and frame climate-linked migration shapes public understanding, policy responses, and impacts the lives of those most at risk. While many organisations avoid talking about it for fear of causing harm or misrepresentation, we believe we need more - not less - conversation. We find that current research is not yet extensive or nuanced enough for us to make applicable recommendations on HOW to communicate about climate-linked migration. We found: ⚖️ Research is unevenly distributed. Few studies focus on the perspectives of people on the move and communities of origin. 📍 Studies disproportionately focus on WEIRD (western, educated, industrialised, rich, democratic) populations, limiting the global relevance of the research. 💬 Current ‘test narratives’ in the research often simplify or misrepresent the complexities of climate-linked migration, portraying it as a crisis and ignoring nuance. 🚪 There is limited interdisciplinary collaboration, with climate-focused research often overlooking migration expertise and lived experience. SO, instead we offer five guiding questions to help practitioners navigate the current and future research for their communications. This report can also help you understand how to deploy relevant research insights in creating communication campaigns and projects. 👉 Download the report now: https://lnkd.in/efTU35Un 🏃♀️ We highly recommend you read the full report, but if you’re short on time, read this short blog: https://lnkd.in/eZkEDa85 💻 Join our webinar at 11am GMT today where we’ll explore this further: https://lnkd.in/eqVpfz4w This research was undertaken by our Climate and Migration Coalition programme. ⏰ Still time to register for our webinar tomorrow! 'Perspectives on communicating climate-linked migration' Extensive research exists on the communication and framing of climate-linked migration and displacement, but navigating and applying this research can be difficult. Our soon-to-be-released literature review can support you in navigating the current research on communicating climate-linked migration and help you decide what is best for your work. Our webinar will give you an opportunity to learn more about this research field and hear from various organisations working at this intersection, offering different perspectives on the topic. 📅 5 December, 11:00 - 12:00 GMT We will be hearing from: - Fahmida Miah, Climate Outreach - Luisa Melloh, Climate Outreach - Julia Beart, Climate Migration Collaborative - Innah Gaspar, Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC) Register: https://lnkd.in/eqVpfz4w Climate and Migration Coalition is a programme managed by Climate Outreach

As climate impacts worsen, the intersections of climate change and migration are becoming increasingly clear, with some of the world’s most vulnerable communities bearing the brunt of climate change. Despite this, so far, there is little in the way of guidance for how to effectively communicate about climate-linked (im)mobilities. How can we engage the public on these intersecting topics in a way that puts people at the heart of the stories we tell and protects the dignity and rights of migrants? What evidence is there for effective narratives and messages so far and what does it mean for communicators in practice? New piece from Alex Randall - 'We need a jigsaw approach to climate-driven displacement' - exploring the role of climate negotiations and what #COP29 might be able to achieve on climate-driven displacement. Read now 👇
Each year the climate negotiations attempt to deal with the human cost of climate change – in particular climate-driven displacement. While recent talks have acknowledged the issue, concrete action remains elusive. So what are the limits of climate negotiations in this space? What could #COP29 achieve? And who are the other players in the game? Our colleague Alex Randall, who manages Climate and Migration Coalition, explores these questions in this new piece: https://lnkd.in/eYYxVNJj __ If you work at the intersection of climate and migration, join us for a webinar exploring how we can effectively communicate about climate-linked (im)mobilities. 📅 5 December, 11:00 - 12:00 🖋️ Register: https://lnkd.in/eqVpfz4w

Climate and Migration Coalition reposted this
This week Fahmida Miah will be joining Counterpoints Arts 2024 Pop Culture and Social Change Retreat. She’ll be joining 50 activists, change-making filmmakers, and cultural innovators focusing on harnessing the power of narrative power to achieve climate and migrant justice. Fahmida will be sharing findings from our migration programme’s research during the ‘Narrative Power in 2024’ session, exploring the interconnections of climate change and its impact on patterns of human movement, and how to emphatically communicate this topic in ways that are radical and popular. Organised through Counterpoints Art’s PopChange programme, the retreat has been running since 2018 cultivating a reflective space to generate cross-sector exchanges, ideas and collaborations.
