Shared e-bikes and e-scooters could replace 56% of car commutes in England and Wales, a study by CoMoUK finds. This translates into saving one million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. In its report funded by the Foundation for Integrated Transport, CoMoUK investigates the full potential of shared transport in England and Wales and sets out seven recommendations to unlock greater use. “The UK gives almost no public subsidy to shared transport, unlike some other nations who are doing much better in this regard,” CoMoUK Chief Executive Richard Dilks told Zag Daily. The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) is calling for an urgent overhaul of the investigation of road traffic fatalities in the UK. In a PACTS report by Nick Reed and Jeremy Phillips issued today, it points out that: - Every day, road traffic fatalities claim lives across the UK, yet the systems meant to investigate these incidents often fall short. - Just 3% of road deaths result in prevention of future deaths (PFD) reports from coroners. - There is no formal follow-up to reports: local authorities face no sanctions for failing to act on recommendations, leaving critical safety concerns unresolved. - Unlike other transport sectors, road fatalities lack a central body for analysing trends and identifying at-risk groups. - Poor collaboration among stakeholders delays safety improvements across organisations. - Failing to learn from and act on any such tragedy leaves an open wound for the families involved and puts others at risk of the same fate. All road fatalities are preventable. Five key recommendations: - Provide ‘safe system’ training for coroners to help them produce actionable, safety-focused PFD reports. - Learn from other transport sectors: establish a dedicated Road Investigation Branch. - Enhance collaboration through stronger partnerships between local authorities, manufacturers, and safety organisations to help with faster, coordinated responses to road safety concerns. - Standardise PFD reporting with clear guidelines for coroners. - Strengthen accountability by enforcing legal obligations on authorities and organisations to respond to PFD reports and introducing sanctions for non-compliance. Can you imagine, following a fatal air crash, we shrugged our shoulders and walked away? Unlike air, rail, and maritime transport, road deaths lack a dedicated investigative body, a gap that limits the nation’s ability to prevent future tragedies. A consortium of more than 100 road safety campaigners, health, police and local authorities have called on the government to establish this for road. 🚦 Creating a transport network that puts people first 🚦 It’s been over 25 years since the last English integrated transport strategy was developed. Today, more than ever, our communities need a reliable, joined-up transport network across all towns and cities—one that truly prioritises people. Since our inception TRL’s mission has been to create clean and efficient transport that is safe, reliable and accessible for everyone, a mission that aligns perfectly with the vision set out in yesterday's launch of the government's Integrated Transport Strategy. We welcome the 'people first' approach and we're here to help drive the positive change which is needed across our transport system. 💡 Interested in learning more? Motorcycle helmets are PPE - personal protective equipment. They are a legal requirement in the UK because they save lives and reduce injuries. Riders can pay more for fancy finishes or funky features. But they never need to pay more for safety. Recently, the helmet test technicians at TRL tested two popular brands of helmet for SHARP, the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme, a scheme to help motorcyclists make an informed choice when buying a helmet. One helmet was "top of the range", a high end name, retailing at approx £800. Designed in accordance with the new ECE 22-06 standards, it comfortably scored 5 stars. The other helmet, also a very well known brand, is designed to sell in volume at a price point of around £150. To no one's surprise in the lab, it also comfortably scored 5 stars. This is the enduring appeal of the SHARP rating system. It is the evidence that the price of a motorcycle helmet is not an indicator of its ability to protect the wearer from a serious head injury in a crash. Compare all the 2024 helmet ratings online at at https://sharp.dft.gov.uk The TRL test crew are looking forward representing SHARP at the Motorcycle Live Show at the NEC 16 - 24 November. The show is a great day out for all the family. https://bit.ly/2qn78tM If you love riding motorbikes, or ride for work, and are thinking of buying a new helmet, please do come and say hello on stand 4C04. There is so much more information we can share about how to choose a helmet to help save your life. Our advice is free, and it takes but a moment to check the SHARP rating of the helmet you are considering buying. #motorcycle #motorbike #helmet #roadsafety
