We are delighted to be one of ten successful organisations, chosen by The Robertson Trust, to be awarded a grant to help improve job design and flexibility in frontline roles, in Scotland. We have a long history of supporting flexible job creation in Scotland, and put forward a bid through the Trust’s Work Pathways open call, which challenged charities and social enterprises to design ideas to deliver big change, to help tackle in-work poverty in Scotland over the next 3-5 years.   Our project aims to change the way in which roles in key low wage industries are designed and advertised. It will unlock more secure/increased hours and progression opportunities for low paid workers and those facing structural barriers to fair work, by working with employers in target sectors to open up more of their vacancies to flexible working options and predictable hours. We are excited to start on this programme in the new year.   Lyndsay Fraser Robertson, The Robertson Trust Programme Officer says: "These awards are designed to support work over the next 3-5 years that has a high potential for delivering significant, long-term impact on poverty and trauma. It's always great to spend time with people that are focused on solutions, so the Early Education and Childcare Coalition was delighted to co-host a private roundtable with Timewise today on how to make flexible working work in the early years. The #ChildcarePioneers report by the brilliant team at Timewise finds that over 17,000 staff could be recruited through increased flexible working - half the number required to meet the demand created by the expansion of the new entitlements. This supports our own research with University of Leeds last year which found that almost all of those who had recently left the sector would return under the right conditions. We heard from settings about how to manage multiple requests for flexibility and, critically, how to maintain consistency for children. But above all else, important reminders from Neil Leitch and June O'Sullivan OBE about the absolute necessity of supporting the wellbeing of the early years workforce. Thanks to those settings that took up our invitation to join the conversation, as well as coalition partners and colleagues at the Department for Education for joining. How do we tackle the big divide between the flexible haves and have nots?   Refreshing to see some practical recommendations for flexible working on the frontline at Timewise's roundtable today. It's far from easy, but their two year pilot has shown that flex is do-able even in over-stretched and under-resourced childcare settings, with huge implications for staff recruitment and retention. Our own research at Young Women's Trust highlights the critical importance of flexible working to young women, many of whom are flexible ‘have nots’ in the care, retail and education sectors.   As Timewise’s flex pilots have shown in a wide range of workplaces, practical initiatives such as more staff-led rostering, changes to job design, supportive HR teams and skilling up line managers makes some level of flex possible for everyone. The report highlighted that while we need to take as much care of the staff as we do of the children we also need to ignite a deeply philosophical conversation about the role of #care in society. This conversation needs to start with pregnancy, small children and go all the way to old people. Care is the glue that holds a compassionate society together. We cannot keep pushing policies to resolve political positions without addressing the underpinning philosophy that will create the cultural norms that will see the policies succeed for everyone. The number of over 65s in work has risen since the early 2000s and more than doubled among women, a new study has found. Those aged 50-64 years old were also more likely to be working, with 78% of men and 69% of women economically active versus 74% and 58% 20 years ago. Interestingly, the numbers of women over 50 working part-time have been declining, while the numbers of men doing so - are rising.
