There is a concerning developing where Restraint is being used to manage behaviour, this will not address the underlying unmet need. Worryingly Teachers from both primary and secondary phases are more likely to have restrained a pupil in a school serving a more disadvantaged area (28 per cent), the survey shows. Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the NAHT school leaders’ union, said: “There appears to have been a tangible change in pupil behaviour post-Covid, and a significant rise in reported mental health challenges.” Restraint is traumatic and it will exacerbate poor mental health, we have to understand that behaviour is communication and recognise children with poor emotional wellbeing need to be regarded as vulnerable rather than troublesome. We need a country wide approach, with a commitment from all services to support our most vulnerable pupils and investment in training and development focused on restraint reduction and elimination https://lnkd.in/eX-CJ2VP
