  • ⚓ Building on the momentum from the Fish Platform conference held in Cape Town in November, where our CEO John Lloyd FNI advocated for continued professional development and safety in the fishing industry in partnership with the Thrive in Fishing initiative (a collaboration with The Seafarers’ Charity), The Nautical Institute remains committed to advancing international fishing safety. On Tuesday 10th of December Capt Jeff Parfitt FNI, Head of Safety and Environment participated in a session hosted by the Fisheries Innovation & Sustainability (FIS) group at Fishmongers’ Hall in London. 🐟 The FIS group is a dynamic UK organization dedicated to advancing technological innovation in the fishing industry. Its key areas of focus include smart trawl systems that allow for selective catching of target species and the adoption of alternative fuels to reduce environmental impact, which is of particular interest to us. The session offered an invaluable opportunity to align The Nautical Institute’s safety and environmental projects with wider industry efforts, while engaging with key stakeholders across the sector. We had fruitful discussions with representatives from the FIS, the Young Fishermen’s Network (YFN), the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Fisheries, and Lloyd's Register Foundation. 🤝 It was also a pleasure to reconnect with familiar faces from the FISH Platform and The Seafarers’ Charity. Great to meet Dr. Daryl Attwood of Lloyds Register Foundation, Robert Greenwood MNM AFNI of the FISH Platform By participating in events like these, The Nautical Institute continues to foster collaboration and innovation, reinforcing its dedication to a safer and more sustainable future for the fishing industry. #NauticalInstitute #FishingSafety #Collaboration

  • 🚢 The safety of seafarers was the focus of a sequence of regulatory and guideline developments at last week’s International Maritime Organization Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 109). 🌊 The discussion on piracy and armed robbery at sea highlighted ever increasing levels of international cooperation that seek to address this matter. It was noted that the long-term trend of incidents remains downwards, with 72 incidents reported between January and June 2024, compared with 90 for the same period in 2023. 🔒 Turning to maritime security, the value of the IMO GISIS database on port security was highlighted to all those who plan the security element of port calls. In saying that, it was noted that 21% of ports globally need to update their port data, and all ports were encouraged to keep their information in GISIS current. 🐳 We were delighted that the Committee formally noted The Nautical Institute’s submission, highlighting our recent work with the OCEAN Navigation Awareness Project. The initiative developed and published online a suite of new Continuous Professional Development material, available for free to all. 📑 A more detailed report about MSC 109 and the working groups on Alternative Fuel safety and Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships will be published in our members’ magazine, Seaways next month. 🤓 To stay up to date with our news from the IMO keep an eye on our page here: https://lnkd.in/ezDtFc-c 🖊️ Our delegation last week was headed by Chris O'Flaherty AFNI and supported by Capt. Robert McCabe FNI, Capt. Jeff Parfitt FNI, Capt. Aly Elsayed AFNI, Prof. Malek Pourzanjani CEng FRIN FNI, Ann P. • ⚓ It’s been a busy week for us at the International Maritime Organization, co-organising a major international symposium while also gaining valuable insights from another impactful event. 📅 On Thursday and Friday, we proudly supported the 3rd International Maritime Human Factors Symposium, welcoming over 150 maritime experts to the IMO headquarters. The symposium explored a broad range of topics, including human-centred design, maritime safety, risk and safety management, training, and seafarer wellbeing. 🤝 In collaboration with University of Strathclyde, Chalmers University of Technology, World Maritime University, National Technical University of Athens, CHIRP, ITU, Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) and Viasat, this symposium has become a world-leading forum for academia, industry, and regulatory bodies to exchange ideas and insights on the human element. Our keynote speaker, Mr BingBing Song, Head of the IMO’s Maritime Training and Human Element subdivision, set the tone by repeatedly emphasising the importance of the seafarer in his opening address. All speakers reinforced the critical role of the human element in maritime operations. ⚠️ The importance of this topic was emphasised by the unfortunate news on Friday that a “series of human errors” had led to the grounding and sinking of HMNZS Manawanui on 5 October 2024, as announced by the Royal New Zealand Navy. This incident resonated deeply with symposium participants and was discussed during the breaks, highlighting the urgent need for a better understanding of the human element across all maritime sectors. 🤓 Earlier in the week, the IMO also prioritised training, this time for the delegates involved in shaping maritime regulations. Across two intensive days, new IMO team members and representatives, including some from The Nautical Institute, participated in comprehensive sessions to better understand the processes behind developing and issuing IMO instruments. ❗ Next week the IMO will host the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC). The Nautical Institute has accredited a delegation of experts who will advocate on behalf of our members and all seafarers focusing on key seagoing safety issues. #NauticalInstitute #HumanFactors #MaritimeSafety
