“The marine industry is transforming,” Kevin Daffey, Chair of the Board of Trustees at IMarEST explains, “but we need skilled, adaptable people to drive this change. Our future depends on it.” With 90% of the world’s trade moving by sea and offshore wind energy poised to grow fivefold in the next decade, the marine industry is more vital than ever. Despite its importance, the sector struggles to attract new talent. Less than 100,000 engineers enter marine roles annually, far short of what’s needed to maintain vessels, ports, and cutting-edge technologies. Daffey believes the key lies in transforming perceptions. Remote monitoring and autonomy are reshaping marine careers, creating opportunities for people with diverse skills and backgrounds who can thrive onshore and offshore. Learn more about the marine industry's purpose-driven careers offerings on our digital series, Oceans of Opportunity, produced in partnership with Content With Purpose 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e2qSsRGM 🎤: Kevin Daffey, FREng, FIMarEST #OceansOfOpportunity #MarineCareers #BlueEconomyHeroes #MarineProfessionals #NetZeroOcean #OceanRenewables #ProtectOurOceans #BlueEconomyInnovation #ThrivingBlueEconomy #MaritimeInnovations #SustainableOceanChartering 🎥: Content With Purpose

It’s the holiday season and polar bears, penguins, and reindeer are appearing on cards, jumpers and shop windows in many countries. But, in the natural world, polar creatures are also turning up in unusual places. For instance, this November an emperor penguin was found on a beach in Western Australia, more than 2,000 miles from his home in Antarctica.❄️🐧 Conor Savage, the chair of our Polar Regions Special Interest Group, discusses this phenomenon and why it might be on the rise: #IMarESTBlog #IMarEST

With 90% of global trade transported by sea, the maritime industry is pivotal in addressing climate change. Cargill is leading the way, testing wind propulsion technologies for over a decade. Today, three vessels are already equipped with innovative kite sails, reducing emissions and paving the way for a sustainable future. By collaborating across the value chain, Cargill is charting a greener course for shipping and driving the industry toward net zero by 2050. 🌟IMarEST Member spotlight🌟 Lieutenant Commander Lyndsay Oldridge MBE, who sits on the IMarEST Membership Committee, received an MBE on the King’s Birthday Honours list for her time as the Marine Engineering Officer on HMS Medway. It was her first appointment in charge of an engineering department and she “acted as the catalyst for positive change at all levels and was instrumental to HMS Medway’s ability to deliver operational tasking in the Atlantic”. “When I was told, I was in complete shock and a little speechless,” the 42-year-old from South Wales said. “Now it has sunk in, I feel extremely honoured to have been recognised for this award and I feel very proud. “My time on Medway has been the highlight of my career so far. During my time as Marine Engineering Officer the ship was supporting humanitarian and counter illicit trafficking operations, assisting British Overseas Territories after a hurricane and doing a drugs bust. “We also operated in the South Atlantic, Falklands and we were lucky enough to visit South Georgia too. “All of this was only possible with the tireless efforts of my department, who provided an exceptionally high level of availability and professionalism.” Congratulations Lyndsay!🎖️ Full article👉ow.ly/lUcb50UqGju #IMarEST #IMarESTSpotlight
