Exciting developments yesterday! Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP announced the process which he will be leading to deliver a new national food strategy. The strategy aims to deliver outcomes in 4 major areas: food security, health, environment and economy. It was very reassuring to hear his emphasis on securing access to nutritious food for everyone, particularly children, as well as the other important elements like building resilience of our food system to climate shocks and providing much needed support to farmers.
And he is using systems language - looking at the whole system from production to consumption - again this is new and helpful language from DEFRA which is focusing minds on the outcomes of the system, and how the existing incentives and guardrails can be better aligned with the outcomes which we all want the food system to be delivering.
I'm really encouraged by this. All the work that Henry Dimbleby and many others (including me!) put into the National Food Strategy (Independent Review), provides a fantastic foundation and should allow DEFRA to jump straight into which policies should be prioritised. They will use co-development, and the establishment of a delivery board (involving businesses, academics and charities) - a process which will kick off in the new year. It will be a cross-government process linking into the Health Mission Board and work closely with devolved nations - which are already ahead of England in some of their policy development.
We at The Food Foundation , along side many of our partners, will be doing all we can to support and enable a strong set of actions.
While actually delivering on this ambition demands serious leadership and political bravery and won't be easy, there are quick wins which will deliver tangible results and in the long term the legacy would be nothing short of transformative, reshaping society for the better.
