Recently, our CEO, Belinda Parmar OBE, was quoted in a Factorial article, “The FBI Hostage Negotiation Tactic You Need to Be a Better Leader.” In the article, former hostage negotiator and now CEO of The Black Swan Group, Christopher Voss is discussed regarding his use of tactical empathy and negotiation skills for business. Voss describes tactical empathy as a skill that works in hostage negotiations as much as with employees too. This chimes with Simon Sinek who argues, framing feedback with empathy can make all the difference in encouraging loyalty and driving engagement. Furthermore, we agree with Daniel Lubetzky, CEO and Founder of KIND, who is cited saying “empathy and kindness offer a distinct competitive advantage”. Empathy is a profit driver, and companies that ignore this are leaving value on the table. For Computer Science Education week, we looked at how women and girls’ representation in tech careers and education has changed since the publication of our CEO Belinda Parmar OBE's book, Little Miss Geek. Since 2011, some progress has been made - but we can still go further towards building a more gender balanced tech industry. We need an environment that encourages young women and girls to want to study and work in these fields, and ensure everyone feels a sense of belonging in tech spaces. What do you think the impact of this gender imbalance is on business? What do we need to do to improve our workplace? On International Men's Day, we don’t want men to feel left behind. While we passionately advocate for women, we also embrace men in conversations about mental health and emotional well-being to create a more empathic and inclusive society. Recent research by the Survey Center on American Life suggests men are lonelier than ever. Nearly 1 in 3 men state they only have 6 friends, and this is 50% less than it was 30 years ago. As recent political events have shown, individuals feeling heard and valued is crucial for unity. Let's build bridges, not walls, and encourage open dialogue that benefits us all. EY fired dozens of employees for simultaneously attending multiple CPE online learning courses, claiming that this breached the company's internal code of conduct and global learning policies. The decision, however, has been met with considerable backlash as employees argue they were never warned that attending multiple sessions would result in termination, and claim that they were often encouraged to multitask.
