About us

The British Association of Removers (BAR) is the only trade association in the removals sector who protects consumer interests. It was formed in 1901 to promote excellence in the Removals Industry. Ever since, the Association sets professional standards for the moving and storage industries through its Code of Practice. BAR Members are the UKs leading professional removal and storage companies, and specialise in all aspects of removals throughout the UK and Europe, plus international and commercial relocations. For over 100 years, the British Association of Removers has been the recognised voice of the professional moving and storage industry in the United Kingdom. Its members carry out some 400,000 moves within the UK and worldwide each year. If you are moving in the UK, overseas, in Europe or if you are relocating your offices, search for a BAR Member, and ‘Look for the badge’!

  • We understand that the Environment Agency has been examining the exporting of Household Goods (HHG) shipments in relation to the shipment of waste. They advise, shipments of ‘Household Goods/personal effects’, should they contain any electrical items (even if they are intended for personal use) are required to be PAT & Functionality tested by a qualified tester who holds NVQ level 3 or higher qualification. The purpose for them requiring testing is to verify they are fully functional without repair. If they are not functional, the regulations outline that they are waste (WEEE) which are prohibited to non OECD countries and at best (for OECD countries), they are required to be exported under notification controls. Therefore, they recommend that shipments that contain any form of electrical appliance have been tested and the evidence of the PAT testing & Functionality testing, is placed inside the container and a copy of the qualification certificate present within the container. This in turn will enable their officers to review the paperwork during an inspection and if satisfied, release the hold to prevent any potential delays in the shipment. BAR has been informed a Member’s container, had a STOP notice placed on it with the shipping line as the Environment Agency deemed it to be transporting waste, as it contained electrical items that were not PAT tested. The BAR and the MTC are now opening discussions with the Environment Agency to better understand these requirements and how they are applied to HHG shipments, more information will be distributed once known. In the meantime, movers need to be aware that the Environment Agency is actively enforcing these regulations, and while we have no idea of the percentage of containers they are currently examining, the additional costs from the shipping line and possible enforcement actions are significant. Please make sure all staff are aware. #PATTesting #HouseholdGoods #HHGShipments #Shipping #EnvironmentAgency #WEEE

  • The excellent BAR Young Movers Conference extended through to the Saturday morning this year, with 20 or so of the remaining delegates visiting the SS Great Britain, which at the time of her launch in 1845 was the largest and fastest passenger ship in the world. The ship - constructed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel - now sits in dry dock, having been rescued from the Falkland Islands where she was scuttled in 1937 and towed back the 8,000 miles to her Bristol home in 1970 where she was painstakingly restored as a museum ship, and is now the city's #1 attraction. This Young Movers group was fortunate to have not just the two attraction guides on their visit but also delegate Harvey Mallender who, now being a local himself, was able to fill in any historical factual gaps. It's York for the Young Movers Group next year! Find out more about the Group here: https://lnkd.in/e2eNRH3q #BARYoungMovers #Bristol #SSGreatBritain
