We refurbish secondhand bikes and donate them to refugees and people in the asylum process.

About us

At The Bike Project, we refurbish secondhand bikes and donate them to refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK. Since 2013, we have given over 8700 bikes. With a bike, a person can access vital services such as healthcare and legal advice, as well as having a link to their local community. We also run engagement programmes like Pedal Power, free cycling lessons for refugee women led by refugee women; and Bike Buddies, a befriending programme to match volunteers with bike recipients.

  • Today in Parliament, our Chief Executive, Lizzie Kenyon, shared crucial evidence on the barriers refugees face in accessing active travel. At The Bike Project, we help to mitigate these challenges by providing refugees with bicycles - but more needs to be done. Lizzie touched on this today, highlighting the policy changes required to address this issue at its core. She was joined by representatives from some incredible organisations within the sector, including Cycle Sisters, Age UK, Living Streets, Wheels For Wellbeing, Black Riders Association, Sähëlï Hub, Transport for All, and Cycle Sprog. We hope today’s discussions lead to meaningful change and create a more inclusive and accessible future for refugees and active travel 🚲 Read more about today's hearing on our website: https://2ly.link/21m0W

Chief Executive Officer at The Bike Project - we refurbish unwanted second-hand bikes and donate them to refugees and people seeking asylum

I am proud to say that The Bike Project was invited to give in-person evidence to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cycling and Walking as part of their inquiry into Social Justice and Active Travel today. https://lnkd.in/ej_FY53s We shared evidence about the barriers refugees, one of the most marginalised communities, face in accessing active travel, how the work of The Bike Project helps and the wider financial, legal and policy measures needed to enable more refugees to benefit from cycling. Great to be giving evidence alongside colleagues from Cycle Sisters, Age UK, Living Streets, Wheels For Wellbeing, Black Riders Association, Sähëlï Hub, Transport for All and Cycle Sprog.

  • When Amina first came to the UK seeking asylum, she was living in a tiny room, with no cooking facilities and surviving on less than £9 a week. Listen to her tell the story of her journey to the UK and how the gift of a bike changed her life. For Amina, a bike was more than just a means of transport. It became a symbol of freedom, independence, and connection to her new community. By providing refurbished bikes, we help refugees and asylum seekers navigate their new lives and build a brighter future 💜 This winter, we’re working to reduce our waiting list so more people can access this vital lifeline. Your support can make a real difference 🌟 Will you help give the gift of community this winter? Donate today and help us transform more lives, just like Amina’s > https://2ly.link/21XuZ See less

  • Taking on a big physical challenge is no easy task...but cycling from Alaska to Argentina, over 20,000 km, is truly next level! 🚴♀️💥 That’s exactly what Emma Alderman, one of our amazing fundraisers, is doing! She’s embarked on this extraordinary journey and is already making fantastic progress. Despite facing numerous challenges like 4 flat tires and 5 bent tent stakes, Emma has pushed through them all, and the stunning landscapes she’s encountered along the way have made it all worthwhile. Emma is riding this epic distance to raise funds for The Bike Project. Every pound she raises directly supports our mission and helps refugees gain freedom and independence through cycling 💜 We couldn’t be prouder of you, Emma - keep going! 💪 If you're inspired by Emma's courage, you can show your support by donating to her fundraising campaign. Every contribution makes a difference 💚 Donate to Emma's Alaska to Argentina campaign here > https://bit.ly/4eUbMpL

  • 🎉 Big news! We’ve collected over 1000 bikes this year thanks to our partnership with Amazon Local Good! 🙌 Amazon has played a key part in helping us transport bikes from our drop-off points, allowing us to make a huge impact in the lives of refugees and people seeking asylum. Here's the difference these bikes will make: 🔧 630 bikes will be refurbished and donated to refugees and people seeking asylum – saving vital costs, improving mental health, wellbeing, and reducing social isolation for so many of them 💰 170 bikes will be sold in our shop, generating over £50,000 of income to reinvest back into our programmes – from continuing our bike donations to teaching women how to cycle for the first time. ♻️ 200 bikes saved from landfill, with their parts recycled and put to good use to further support our cause! A massive thank you to Amazon for their continued support and a big shoutout to Ledjan, our amazing delivery driver, who works with us every week to make it happen 💜 #AmazonLocalGood #TogetherWithAmazon

Lime, London Cycling Campaign, and LOUD MOBILITY have come together  to ‘Share the Joy’ with the launch of a brand new community cycling fund in London. The new fund and campaign aims to celebrate London’s love for cycling, and make it more accessible… and more enjoyable too! 🚲   The £100k fund will help to support organisations and community groups who are improving London’s Accessibility and Inclusion, Health and Wellbeing, and Skills and Connectivity, all through spreading the joy of cycling 🌞   Funded by Lime, the community cycling fund is managed by London Cycling Campaign with support from Loud Mobility, and the first cohort of fund recipients include Cycle Sisters, London Bike Kitchen, The Bike Project, Wheels For Wellbeing and many more. Each will each receive a £2,500 grant to support things like core costs, project costs, and new equipment ⚒️🔧🧰 to increase equitable access to all the benefits of cycling, and may otherwise have difficulty accessing proper funding. The next round of fund grants will be taking place in September, (and more throughout the rest of 2025!). You can find out more by going to: https://lnkd.in/gQ8k5M9D

  • Every day, we are making a difference ✨ Meet Nadira, a proud graduate of our Pedal Power Programme, which teaches women seeking asylum how to cycle. She also joined our Bike Buddies programme, cycling with a local resident as part of this befriending initiative. Nadira has experienced numerous benefits from participating in our programmes. Here’s how it has impacted her: “The Pedal Power cycling lessons were really significant in not only improving my confidence, but overall cycling capabilities and skills. Basically, I was only able to get on a bike and pedal a little bit, but I had no control of the bike at all. After having 10 sessions, I was confident enough to get on the road. I learned to balance on the bike and had a lot more control of the bike. It was unbelievable what I was able to do after a few sessions and practicing on my own after getting a bike from the Bike Project. The work the Bike Project does is really important. The asylum seeking process is a tedious and long process. Many of us asylum seekers are looking for more ways to be active or to be part of a community, and I believe the Bike Project offers that in a lovely and supportive environment.” It's been a pleasure having you as part of Pedal Power and our Bike Buddies Scheme, Nadira! We’re so proud of the progress you’ve made and are thrilled that you’ve had a positive experience in the supportive environment we provide. Thank you for your kind words! ❤️ We’re transforming lives in some of the most challenging circumstances, with every bike, every lesson, and every befriending match. Your support can make a world of difference. By donating to The Bike Project, you’re helping refugees and people seeking asylum find confidence, community, and joy.
