“We must concentrate efforts on reducing extreme poverty more widely, improving the quality of people’s lives and reducing the need for expensive crisis measures.”
I strongly welcome the government's significant investment in homeless prevention services today. As I said on ITV Good Morning Britain this morning, it's vital we try to turn the tide on this crisis and put prevention at the heart of our response. We must concentrate efforts on reducing extreme poverty more widely, improving the quality of people’s lives and reducing the need for expensive crisis measures. The scale of this poverty crisis should not be underestimated. It will take continual and considerable political focus to fix it, as well as collaboration with business and third-sector organisations like Big Issue. But I hope this signals a genuine change in how we approach the problem of homelessness and result in truly sustainable solutions. I encourage anyone wanting to know more about these new plans to pick up a copy of Big Issue (this week is our Christmas special) or read online: https://lnkd.in/echMFchm

#Ad Our commitment to nurturing the next generation of social entrepreneurs has gone global! Following the success of our 16-page Social Enterprise Academy Scotland special edition, we've distributed 740 copies to young changemakers worldwide - 590 across the UK and 150 to schools in Malaysia, Australia and Egypt. The impact is already visible: students from Ardnamurchan High, Carleith Primary, Hilldene Primary, Greatfields School and Bridgend Primary are turning magazine sales into community projects. In Paisley, the young publishers behind The Russell Record visited our Glasgow office, gaining insights into professional publishing while developing their own social enterprise magazine. "Seeing the impact that a magazine can have on so many people was inspirational to the pupils," said teacher Greig McLeod. "The pupils came away full of aspiration and motivation to create the best product that they can." This initiative exemplifies the power of social enterprise to create global change through local action. From funding school Calm Spaces in Scotland to supporting environmental projects in Malaysia, these young entrepreneurs are proving that age is no barrier to making a difference. Join us in celebrating these inspiring young changemakers who are using enterprise to transform their communities across the globe. Schools, in many ways, are at the forefront of the cost of living crisis, witnessing first-hand the impact of poverty on families. 🎁 They might not be able to directly influence national policy, but they can alleviate hardship and support the children and carers under their umbrella... https://lnkd.in/ew-QdFnM

In perhaps his most personal column to date, Big Issue editor Paul McNamee writes about how this time last Christmas, his family was standing on the edge of a deep drop. They just didn’t know it yet. ✍️ Read his words on mental health, transporting trees, and hope. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eGhmzJDV
