United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) data tells us that the world is falling far behind in achieving quality education for all. Without additional measures put into place, by 2030, 300 million students will lack basic numeracy/literacy skills, and only 1 in 6 countries will achieve the universal secondary school completion target. To add to this, there is a massive global teacher shortage. We invited five of the world's leading authorities on teaching and K-12 education to share their insights on how we can address this crisis head-on. Today we’re pleased to share our Equity Position. At Taylor & Francis, we are working towards meaningful routes to adequately support all researchers wherever they are based and whatever their circumstances, to develop a broad range of options that best suit their unique contexts. To achieve this, we work very closely as partners with the scholarly community to develop, pilot, expand, scale, and improve longstanding initiatives. The two main pillars of our efforts are: improving affordability for all researchers, and supporting equity in access to research through our diverse partners and initiatives. Generic drugs are always cheaper, right? Not necessarily. According to a new research paper, some medicines may cost less upfront but require increased monitoring, meaning more clinic visits, and additional strain on services. When health care providers are overstretched, patients may not be seen quickly enough. This can have serious health consequences, placing extra burden on the system in the long run. Our Head of Accessibility Stacy Scott was recently asked to contribute her thoughts to the Inclusive Publishing blog. Inclusive Publishing is co-ordinated and managed by the DAISY Consortium, a not-for-profit global collective of organizations committed to delivering worldwide change to achieve the common vision that “people have equal access to information and knowledge regardless of disability; a right confirmed by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.” In “The Critical Role of Allyship and Community in Accessible Publishing” Stacy Scott explains that “allyship and community are essential for creating a more inclusive, equitable publishing landscape.” Read more: http://spr.ly/6043t0CbX #Accessibility

The power of AI in journalism is far-reaching – it can potentially influence the news output, sway public opinion, or change mindsets. It is therefore imperative to consider the context within which it is produced and used. In her new paper “Why Context Matters in Code Studies: Exploring Ways to Globalize/ Diversify Understandings of Algorithmic and AI Use in Journalism,” Dr. Shangyuan Wu argues that we need to pay attention to contextual elements influencing algorithmic and AI use across regions, and not rely wholly on studies from the “contemporary newsroom” that is typically based in North America and Western Europe. Robust, rigorous research has the power to change the world. It is only with evidence-based science, reviewed by experts in the field, that policymakers and world leaders can make informed decisions. That's why F1000Research is supporting the United Nations’ call to improve the world we live in, with open and transparent publication for research which supports their Sustainable Development Goals. This week we’re shining a light on their content for SDG3: Good Health and Well-Being.
