Our latest fund, launched in partnership with climatetech specialists Carbon13, gives investors access to a portfolio of 6-10 climatetech-focused, SEIS-eligible startups at pre-seed stage. Watch the webinar here: https://lnkd.in/eC-wzZph The fund is now open to investment until March 2025, and seeks to deploy funds in the 24/25 tax year. The minimum investment is £10,000, and for those who are ready to invest, you can use the link below to go directly to the fund page. Why climatetech, why now? Climatetech is one of the sectors generating the most significant interest, and attracting the most investment, in UK startups today. This interest has gone against the broader investment trend that has seen venture capital investment slow down in recent years in the wake of an investment surge through 2021 and 2022. While the UK economy saw growth of just 0.5% in 2023, the UKs net zero economy – the subdivision comprising businesses that aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 – grew by 9%. London climatetech startups raised $3.5b in 2023, a significant increase over the £2.2b raised in 2022, putting the UK third globally for VC investment raised in 2023, and London second in the world for climatetech investment, behind Stockholm. “The big shift is that people have stopped asking ‘why do we need to do something’ and started asking ‘how,’ says Nicky Dee, Co-founder and CEO of Cambridge-based, climatetech-focused VC fund and venture builder, Carbon13. This fund, Carbon13's 7th SEIS fund portfolio, will enable eligible investors to claim a suite of tax reliefs including: 🔹 50% income tax relief on up to £200,000 invested, applied to the year of issue or the prior year. 🔹 50% capital gains tax reinvestment relief. 🔹 100% capital gains tax disposal relief. 🔹 100% inheritance tax relief on SEIS shares held for at least two years. 🔹 Loss relief on shares that fall in value. Huge congratulations to Access EIS portfolio company Nivoda – a digital marketplace focused on the diamond industry – on closing its latest funding round for €48.4m https://lnkd.in/dyMpAGcW “The diamond trade is a $100+ billion industry that still operates in a very local and fragmented way. Providing access to a global supply chain is transforming a centuries-old business. The success of this transformation, although we’re still at the early stages, has allowed us to raise investment this year in a challenging funding market,” said Nivoda CEO and co-founder Dave Sutton. “This investment is a testament to the hard work of our team and the trust that our partners and customers place in us.”

What does venture capital have to do with the power law? We analysed UK startup data and found that venture capital returns adhere to a power law distribution with an alpha of 1.8. This means that a small number of startups generate a disproportionate amount of the returns across the group as a whole, and that building larger EIS portfolios will increase your portfolio’s expected average return. The Access EIS Fund was built around data analysis of the UK startup market, and is engineered to give our investors the best opportunities based on exactly this kind of insight. Huge congratulations to Access EIS portfolio company, Silveray and team on its £4m raise to launch Digital X-Ray film technology! "Silveray’s DXF technology centres on a novel flexible material that directly converts X-rays into digital images at the point of use, eliminating the need for traditional radiographic film. This innovation significantly enhances efficiency and cost savings by reducing the time and expense associated with exposing, developing, viewing, and storing radiographic film." Dan Cathie You can read more about the raise here: https://lnkd.in/ebW6XW_8
Announcing our seed investment into 'bendy' digital X-ray company Silveray. Northern Gritstone has led the £4 million round joined by ACF Investors, Empirical Ventures, Deeptech Labs and Hamamatsu Photonics Europe. Silveray's digital technology is also flexible, allowing it to wrap around objects and areas, from industrial pipes to the human body. In the future, this could make mammograms, for example, far less painful. Thank you to Katie Prescott for reporting in today's The Times and we wish her much luck with her forthcoming book. With EIS investing it's important to build large, diverse portfolios of high-quality companies to achieve optimal return potential. Where most funds give you 10 investments, The Access EIS Fund gives you 50. Want to know why? 🔹 If you don’t build sufficiently diverse portfolios, you’re closing your eyes to the reality of startup investing: many startups don’t make it, and there’s no way to know in advance who will and who won’t. Given this reality, small portfolios – or doubling down on a small group of hopefuls who may or may not succeed – often isn't the right approach. 🔹 Why don’t most funds build large portfolios? Because it requires an extremely efficient machine and a high calibre network to access and process this much activity. That’s where our co-investment model comes in, but more about that later. Read the article on why large portfolios are important, why small portfolios fall short, and how the Access Fund model is built to deliver for investors. https://lnkd.in/dzNV3_iz If you'd like to get started building your portfolio, join us here https://lnkd.in/eATKRB66
