About us

We work for and with communities, helping them come to life by walking, wheeling and cycling to create healthier places and happier lives for everyone. Across the UK we involve communities in shaping our towns and cities. Together we campaign for and create spaces where everyone can move around safely and give people the tools and confidence to get out of their cars. We inspire people to change the way we all travel every day, forging closer connections with our neighbours and reducing traffic to create a better environment and more sustainable society for everyone. Join us on our journey. www.sustrans.org.uk

Did you read your local #WalkingCyclingIndex report and wonder what the UK-wide data was? Look no further - we have now published our report that aggregates data from across the UK. 💡 Sustrans’ Walking and Cycling Index, the largest independent survey of active travel in the UK, has revealed that a majority (56%) of people want to shift investment in road building schemes to funding options for walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport. 🚶♀️ 👨🦽 🚲 The report also shows greater public demand for active travel over driving, with 50% wanting to walk more and 43% wanting to cycle more. A third of people want to make greater use of public transport. #Sustrans #ActiveTravel #SustainableTransport #Cycling #Walking Read all about it here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ebN_u23T

  • Sustrans have been working with Harlow & Gilston Garden Town to support and empower the people of Harlow to travel actively. We have been working with St Alban's Catholic Primary School, and have recently delivered a Dr Bike session to ensure the children's cycles are safe to ride.

Walking, wheeling and cycling charity Sustrans have teamed up with HGGT to deliver free bike and scooter safety checks in #Harlow primary schools. Working with the mechanics at Lee Valley Cycles in The Stow and part of Sustrans’ Dr Bike series, the most recent session took place at St Alban’s Catholic Academy with the checks ensuring local children stay safe when cycling and wheeling to school every day. “We’re working with four primary schools on behalf of Harlow & Gilston Garden Town and delivering everything from Dr Bike sessions to assemblies and walking/cycling challenges that encourage and get children excited about the benefits of active travel,” said Sustrans Behaviour Change Officer, Millie Wallis. “It’s important that children are introduced to active travel at an early age as it’s not only great for physical and mental health but can help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution locally.” With over 200 children at St Alban’s Catholic Academy, the school have a wider programme to encourage outdoor activities as Inclusion Leader, Ms Kendell, explained: “Anything that involves rhythmic movement like walking, running, cycling, PE, even music, is important for development and keeping children happy in school and we recognise that happy children are more open to learning. “We have beautiful grounds in the school and being outside and learning allows our staff to enrich the curriculum and we recognise it is just as important as being in the classroom.” Lee Valley Cycles mechanic, David Wales, believes Harlow is the perfect place to encourage youngsters to cycle on a regular basis: “The town has 37 miles of cycling tracks and we want children to not only enjoy using them but be safe when doing so. “Our checks at St Alban’s today have included changing brake pads and cables, making sure the steering is set properly and pumping up the tyres. “Cycling is fantastic regardless of age, it is low impact so if you do have problems walking then it’s a great way to get around and you get the endorphins which are great for mental health.” New to HGGT? • We have created an interactive map showing our plans for improvements to the National Cycle Network over the next few years. Some of these proposed changes include path widening, surface and signage improvements and traffic safety improvements - with the vision of creating safer and more accessible traffic-free paths and quiet roads for all users across the UK. Our Network Development Plans are there for anyone interested in the future of the Network and can be explored using this map. • The 2024 Chief Medical Officer's report for England was released last week, ‘Health in Cities’. “The health benefits of active travel cannot be overstated. People will live much longer happier lives. If they can have active transport and we can make it attractive enough. It’s very clear that exercise is going to improve the health outcomes, both physical and mental, for very large numbers of people – virtually everybody is going to benefit from doing more exercise than they do” Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer Read the report here 👇 (The chapter on active travel is chapter 4.7, page 333)

  • Part two of our video showing the positive impact of a Sustrans project helping women and children fleeing domestic abuse to rebuild confidence and gain a sense of freedom. Alongside housing provider Stonewater and volunteers, bicycles, cycling and bike maintenance sessions are offered to families living in a refuge, enabling them to travel actively and reestablish independence. The project is having a huge positive impact and transforming young lives at the refuge, as this video shows. One 12-year-old boy was told by a doctor he’d never be able to ride a bike but, after just a few weeks at the refuge, he was up and cycling. He now rides his bike to school every day. Reflecting on his journey, Project Officer Lucy Dance says: “For the first few weeks he didn’t talk, but as he learnt how to ride and developed his skills, he started connecting and sharing his experiences. “As his confidence grew, he started cycling every day with other children in the refuge and sharing what he was learning with them.” #Sustrans #ActiveTravel #Cycling #Walking #Wheeling #ChildrenAndYoungPeople #SupportingYouth #WomensRefuge

  • Earlier this week we shared a video showing a project that is helping women and children fleeing domestic abuse to rebuild confidence and gain a sense of freedom. Sustrans has teamed up with housing provider Stonewater and volunteers to offer bicycles, cycling and bike maintenance sessions to families living in a refuge, enabling them to travel actively and reestablish independence. Described as a “tool for change”, the project – assisted by donations of bikes – has helped women and children affected by domestic abuse to rebuild their lives and find feelings of joy and hope in the wake of trauma. Travelling actively to school means children are more alert and engaged in class, are healthier, and enjoy spending quality time with their friends and family. We are delighted that Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, Cambridgeshire County Council, Nik Johnson and school leaders are supporting children to travel actively through the Bike It project

This week, Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, joined pupils from Samuel Pepys school, a special educational needs school, in St Neots, on a bike ride. To help encourage more people to cycle, Mayor Dr Nik Johnson took a bike ride, organised by Sustrans, a UK-wide charity helping more people to cycle.
