We’re halfway through #COP29 🌍🇦🇿 Here are our key takeaways so far... UN-backed Global Carbon Market 🤝 After years of stalling, an agreement has finally been reached to create a global carbon market. Wealthy countries will be able to buy carbon credits to help reach their emission reduction targets, potentially funneling billions into mitigation projects in developing countries. While more funding for climate initiatives is sorely needed, there are still concerns about the validity of some of these projects and debate about whether they distract from actual emissions reduction efforts. UK Announces New Climate Targets 🎯 Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a new target of 81% emissions cut by 2035. The target is in line with the recommendation from the Climate Change Committee but will need to be backed up with a practical action plan to ensure we meet the new goal. Big Business Calls on Governments to Double Down on Climate Action 📣 117 CEOs of some of the world’s largest companies, including Santander, Nestle and SONY, have signed an open letter calling on policy makers to improve the business case for climate action and spur investment. Their demands include developing ambitious NDCs, scaling up climate finance, removing transition barriers and supporting innovative technologies. $120 Billion Pledged by Development Lenders 💸 The world's top multilateral banks have pledged $120bn towards climate finance for low- and middle-income countries by 2030. The target represents a more than 60% increase on what the group delivered last year; however, they warn that more ambition is needed from shareholders in both developed and developing countries if they are to be successful. With 4 days left of negotiations, there is still much more to be discussed in Azerbaijan. Stay tuned for our full #COP29 wrap up next week!

#COP29 kicks off in Azerbaijan today 🌍🇦🇿 Here’s what to expect... This year’s climate conference of the parties has been dubbed the “Finance COP” as its time for countries to set a new climate finance goal. For the first time in 15 years, we will see almost 200 countries discuss a new global financial target to support countries on the front lines of the climate crisis. We will also see a spotlight on countries’ nationally determined contributions (NDCs) as many nations need to set stronger commitments ahead of COP30 in Brazil. NDCs outline how a country plans to curb carbon emissions, forming the foundations of a successful climate transition plan. Finally, #COP29 will see the discussions around fossil fuels and renewable energy continuing from last year’s conference. At COP28, fossil fuels were named in the final document for the first time. However, plans stalled at transitioning away rather than facilitating a full phase-out. This year we expect to see much more discussion around tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency ahead of the 2030 milestone. Stay tuned as we share our thoughts and opinions as the conference develops 💭 What do you want to see from #COP29? ⬇️
