If you’ve seen the movie Skyfall or visited the Scottish Highlands, you may have been struck by the barren hills and seemingly lifeless landscapes. Surprisingly, these “stunning” places are largely the result of human activity. During medieval times, around 80% of Scotland was covered in woodlands. Today, that figure has dwindled to just 19%, with only 4% consisting of native woodlands.

The Nature Ceilidh at Kinkell Byre in St Andrews was a vibrant celebration that combined Scotland’s rich culture with a strong focus on the natural world. Set in the atmospheric converted barn overlooking Fife’s stunning coastline, the event brought together 250 guests to engage with music, nature, and community action for the environment.

A whisky region in Scotland is defined as an area with at least three whisky distilleries. Campbeltown on the Mull of Kintyre (also known because of a certain song) has three distilleries and is therefore one of the five whisky regions.

In my last post I described some options to visit the Home of Golf, St Andrews and other parts of Fife, more precisely East Neuk's fishing villages. Today I would like to invite you to explore options in and around Edinburgh. I often begin at Calton Hill, especially if it is a sunny day. From here you get a manificient overview of the old town, which was built on a vulcanic ridge.

I moved to Scotland in 1993 and we had a Glaswegian friend who introduced us immediately to Glasgow's party scene around Sauchiehall. We had tremendous fun, though -back then- female toilets were not a standard in Glasgow's pubs. Returning in daylight hours to this powerhouse of the industrial revolution was somewhat less magic.
How to fall in love with Glasgow. Here is your guide.
