About us

St Teresa's Hospice is a Registered Charity Reg No 518394 - The Darlington & District Hospice Movement. St Teresa's Hospice aims to provide "CHOICE": C omplete H olistic Palliative Care O ffered In the patient's C hosen E nvironment We are a registered non-profit making charity and our facilities are available free to all terminally ill patients, regardless of the nature of the disease. We are non-denominational and respect the different cultures of all minorities. We believe that a person has the right to choose where they die, e.g. in hospital, hospice or at home. We look at the whole person and take into account the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of the dying patient and his or her family. We offer high-quality medical, nursing and social support to the patient and offer respite and support for carers. We believe that this will enhance the dying person's quality of life and help towards the aim of a peaceful and dignified death. If this can be achieved we believe that it will help the family cope with bereavement in a positive way. We work closely with other professionals in hospitals and in the community and should be seen as complementary to, and not a substitute for, any existing services. Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the modern-day Hospice Movement, once said: "You matter until the last moment of life and we will do all we can not only to help you die peacefully but to live until you die".

  • “Within hours of reopening, we smashed not just one day’s sales target, but the next day’s as well! It’s an incredibly encouraging start, and we’re so grateful to our amazing customers.” - Yvonne MacDonald, Retail Manager. Our Superstore recently closed for three days to complete an ambitious refurbishment, which saw our sales floor space almost double, our former warehouse area open up to become a showroom for furniture and larger items. Frequent supporters of the shop, Jez and Maya Warner, said: “This is the first time we’ve visited the shop since it reopened, and we’re amazed. There’s just a huge amount of choice, and at bargain prices. It’s fantastic.” Maya added: “At first, we thought the furniture section was gone, but then we discovered it had been moved to the new space – it’s like an Aladdin’s cave!” Yvonne, Retail Manager, added: “I would also like to say a big thank you to all our amazing volunteers – including a special team from Cummins in Darlington – who did such a fantastic job helping us transform the store, and our amazing staff team who worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life." Pop down and visit our superstore this festive season! https://lnkd.in/esvajyrE

  • 📣 Hospices in England are to receive £100m of government funding over two years to improve end-of-life care, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has announced. Another £26m is going to hospices for children and young people. 📣 Nicola Myers, our CEO, said: ‘We warmly welcome the government’s recent announcement of a £100 million capital investment in hospices over the next two years. This funding aims to enhance the physical and operational environments of hospices, ensuring they can continue to provide vital care and support to individuals with life-limiting illnesses. Hospices play an essential role in offering compassionate, high-quality care, helping patients maintain a good quality of life, even as they approach the end of life. This investment underscores the importance of this critical work and is a step forward in ensuring hospices can better serve their communities. However, while we are encouraged by this announcement, we await further details on how the funding will be allocated and implemented at a local level. Additionally, financial challenges remain significant for St Teresa’s Hospice, particularly in covering our ongoing operational costs of running the hospice, with staffing being our largest expenditure. We look forward to working with the government and other stakeholders to ensure this investment translates into meaningful improvements for hospice care, while continuing to advocate for sustainable solutions to address the day-to-day financial pressures we face.’ Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dWjzNExR

  • 🌙✨ Moonlight and Memories ✨🌙 A massive THANK YOU to everyone who took part, supported, and made this event so special! 💚 Together, we raised nearly £16,000 ! We have been blown away by the support. Your generosity and support mean the world to us. Make sure to check out our photo post for all the amazing pics from the night. For everyone who made this happen—thank you once again! We would like to finish with this wonderful poem written for us by a kind supporter: The sky was clear as we all appeared at South Park (Some of us with very full hearts,) to honour those cared for by St.Teresa’s hospice staff, until they rallied, or for some, breathed their last. The work they do is so reassuring, For any worries that families are enduring. And so we walked with pride, Remembering the wonderful times when loved ones were by our side. As we raised a good sum, To support their much needed income. It was a special evening for everyone, And a thank you to St Teresa’s, for you’re all second to none! 💚
