Spotlight Inclusion support arts organisations to become more inclusive and diverse both on and off stage.

About us

At Spotlight Inclusion we strive to inspire innovative progression of representation and diversity in the arts - both on stage and in the audience. We aim to support performing arts organisations by creating a diverse, representative workforce and audience base. Our consultants work closely with leaders and their teams to analyse an organisation’s current standing with diversity, equity, and inclusion. We focus on practical, implementable strategies with an intersectional approach. These tools and solutions help foster consistent, positive movement toward a more inclusive space for everyone involved. We work with arts organisations to build a robust long-term strategic plan to maintain and elevate positive progress and help organisational leaders remove barriers to better support their team. We give practical support by creating, delivering, and implementing actionable, measurable training plans tailored to the organisation’s goals and needs. We offer guidance, validation, and understanding to individuals who are experiencing discrimination and providing tools to navigate difficult, even unacceptable, situations.

Culture, Diversity and Inclusion Consultants supporting organisations to create a truly inclusive working environment.

I recently facilitated a session for some leaders in education each of whom are working hard to create inclusive environments in their schools. They are really trying. The challenges in education can’t be underestimated in terms of cuts in resources, the expectations for teachers and schools to be social workers, signpost to benefits, meet the needs of every single individual child in the school, working in an environment which is over scrutinised in my view and very results driven. These are just a few of the challenges in education, the list is extensive. As a previous senior leader in secondary education, I can tell you that working 7-5 and then 7-11 was normal practice. This can only lead to burn out and even though we may perceive leaders to be promoted above the workload, you find that the workload remains, it just looks different to when you were teaching a full timetable. So, here we have a group of senior leaders who are trying to embed inclusive practice in the shape of care for their staff, care for students and then system change around things such as policy and curriculum. Great, no criticism here, but the challenge is that if they are not prepared to put boundaries in place for themselves, nothing will change. If they are not saying, ‘my needs as a leader are not being met, but by all means keep telling me about yours’, any inclusion strategy will fail. It is vital for them to model self care and boundaries, to say this work will have to wait because actually my mental and physical health is more important, to say we actually don’t need to do this anymore, let’s change/simplify/remove it. Until then, inclusion won’t work because what people will see is a maintenance of the status quo and because you are a leader, they will think those behaviours are what are required to get ahead, or guilt of seeing you working while they are resting will still motivate them to keep working in an exclusionary environment which is not conducive to long term sustainability and wellbeing.
