Serco’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets have received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative. Serco’s Group Chief Executive Mark Irwin comments: I’ve always said I am proud to lead a company that has ‘impact a better future’ as its purpose. As the partner of choice to governments, we take our role in combating the climate crisis very seriously. We recently had our decarbonisation targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, meaning our target ambitions are in line with a 1.5C trajectory. This is an important milestone in our decarbonisation journey, and I am so pleased that our ambitious emissions reduction targets have received this recognition. Deep emissions cuts and rapid progress towards Net Zero emissions are crucial to the better future we are working to create. We are committed to our Net Zero goal. 🚛🦸♂️♻️ Not all heroes wear capes, some wear hi-vis jackets and drive recycling lorries! Last month the Environmental Services team at Rushmoor welcomed 7 year-old Mabel to the depot. Why, because Mabel is one of their biggest fans who during the school summer holidays would be waiting on collection days with a big wave and a smile. And when the time came for Mabel to go back to school, she was upset that she wouldn’t see her favourite crew anymore, so she left them an incredibly thoughtful message that also showed off her amazing art skills. 🎨 To say thank you the Rushmoor team invited Mabel and Mum Zoe to the depot for a VIP tour (which included tea and cake) where Mabel got to ride in one of the recycling trucks, sit in the sweeper, and learn about what happens at the depot. She was also given her own hi-vis jacket and pink eco-friendly recycling truck made out of plastic bottle tops. Not only that, Mabel’s favourite crew made a special trip back to the depot to say hello, thank her in person, and have their photos taken with her. 💬Bertie Young, Regional Director, Environmental Services praised the team and said: “Our Environmental Services teams are always keen to get our younger residents engaged with waste and recycling, especially if they have a particular interest. We have many 'regulars' on our rounds waiting with a friendly wave and big smile which always makes the crews’ day. If we can say thank you to them and encourage their interests in recycling, then we are more than happy to oblige.” #SercoUK #Recycling #EnvironmentalServices Rushmoor Borough Council | James Hogg

Driven by a commitment to building sustainable and economically efficient solutions, our team at Clarence Correctional Centre (CLA) has achieved a significant environmental milestone through the successful application of biosolids to land within the facility. This innovative approach has reduced methane emissions by up to 90%—equivalent to taking 200 cars off the road for a year—and saved the centre approximately $50,000 in transport and landfill costs. The biosolids, a by-product from the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) at the centre, were historically disposed of in landfills, contributing significantly to harmful methane emissions. With an annual disposal requirement of roughly 140 tonnes based on the current occupancy, the centre faced a considerable challenge to manage this waste sustainably. Despite harsh weather conditions and tight time constraints, our team successfully navigated these obstacles. Rainfall totals in May were 25.2% above the area average, delaying the application process and threatening the functionality of the WWTP. The application area, characterised by fine clay subsoil, required extended drying periods before heavy machinery could access the site. Despite these challenges, the project has delivered substantial environmental and economic benefits. The practice has recovered around 6,900kg of phosphorus and 9,300kg of nitrogen, replacing an equivalent of 56.4 tonnes of CO2 associated with agricultural fertiliser production. To put this into perspective, the amount of nitrogen recovered is equivalent to the nitrogen content in about 930,000 litres of cow milk! This not only addresses waste management challenges but also contributes to significant environmental and economic benefits, paving the way for more sustainable practices in the future. Josh Hollington, the Plumbing Supervisor at CLA, is a driving force behind the centre's sustainability initiatives. With a diverse career background in plumbing, mining, and bridge construction, Josh joined Serco in February 2020 and quickly established himself as a key figure in the centre's environmental efforts. "Since joining, my role has evolved significantly. I now lead the hydraulic services team, oversee maintenance, repair activities, and lifecycle replacement in line with contractual obligations,” Josh explained. As his role has expanded, so has his autonomy to innovate, aiming to improve processes, pre-empt issues, and showcase impactful change in environmental management. This successful initiative at CLA serves as a model for other facilities around the world, demonstrating that with innovative thinking and determination, significant environmental improvements are achievable. #ESG #EnvironmentalInitiatives #Sustainability #GreenFuture #SercoASPAC #ImpactABetterFuture

Do you know what a Therapeutic Community is? 🤔 A Therapeutic Community (TC) is a long-term, accredited intervention used in the prison service, aimed at reducing the risk of reoffending. TCs are based on the idea that people living together and belonging to a community are able to change through their interpersonal experiences. There are formal therapy groups each day, but therapy is happening all day every day, not just during meetings or one-on-one sessions. Test your prison service knowledge with our poll below! 👇
