Taking Care to the Patient
About us
As the frontline of the NHS in Scotland and with over 4500 members of staff, we provide an emergency ambulance service to a population of over 5 million people serving all of the nation’s mainland and island communities. The Scottish Ambulance Service responds to around 1.8 million calls for emergency and non-emergency assistance each year. We attend nearly 700,000 emergency and unscheduled incidents. We transfer around 90,000 patients between hospitals each year and respond to over 150,000 urgent requests for admission, transfer and discharge from GPs and hospitals Our air ambulance service undertakes around 3,500 missions and we co-ordinate the delivery of the ScotSTAR Specialist Transport and Retrieval Service for Scotland which transfers 2,300 of the most seriously ill patients to specialised treatment. Our Patient Transport Service takes over 1.1 million patients to and from scheduled hospital appointments each year. We employ over 4,700 highly skilled staff and operate across the whole of mainland Scotland and its island communities, supporting 14 territorial Health Boards. We are helped by over 1,200 volunteers working in roles such as community first responders and volunteer car drivers.

🎄🥳 Christmas parties have been taking place across Grampian since early December, but the festivities are set to peak today on what's known as 'Mad Friday.' This unfortunately means we will see more people visiting our Emergency Departments (ED) over the next few days with partying-related injuries. 📽 Throughout the day, we'll be sharing short films featuring Dr Catharina Hartman and Darren Watson from our ARI Emergency Department (ED) team offering advice and tips on how to have fun tonight (and throughout the festive period) while still staying safe. 🤕 If you sustain a non-life-threatening injury and think you need to go to ED (A&E), call your GP first, or NHS 24 on 111 if it's out-of-hours, to be directed to the right NHS service. 👉 https://lnkd.in/d2CAmyE And remember, if you do need to visit us, our staff are here to help you - please respect us. #RightCareRightPlace #MadFriday #RespectUs

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Neil Gray, visited our Edinburgh City Ambulance Station yesterday ahead of our busy festive period to thank staff for delivering vital services during challenging times and said people should only dial 999 in cases of emergency. Our Chief Executive, Michael Dickson, spoke to Global News about the pressures the service is facing this winter. He said: "In December, we typically handle over 100,000 calls - almost double our average monthly call demand. However, this year, all indicators point to an even more challenging few weeks ahead over winter." Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dJy35Xju The Scottish Government

Thanks very much to STV for joining one of our crews on a night shift recently. They also spoke to one of our call handlers and our CEO. Gives an insight into the challenges being faced at the moment but also of the great job our staff are doing https://lnkd.in/enwvbAAd
