👩⚖️ How can the legal sector better support disabled colleagues? Reena used to worry that disclosing her conditions would ‘hold her back’ in her career. But this has since become the focus of her work. In improving accessibility and inclusion at work, she hopes to see better disability representation in law. A sector that’s historically been lacking in it. Employee networks are vital in this. And it’s crucial that employers engage with networks like hers to know what will truly support colleagues.

💬 “I don’t think you can understand it unless you know what it is like to face daily discrimination.” ⚠️ Reminder to businesses in England, Wales, and Scotland! The Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful to discriminate against a disabled person because they have an assistance dog with them. It’s your duty to know this, and ensure your employees do, too. Disabled people like Sean shouldn’t have to keep fighting for this to be understood.

💬 Language matters. 3 in 4 disabled people report experiencing negative attitudes, and the words we use have a big impact on this. The team at @GreeneKing have really taken this on board, changing the name of one of its pubs to make it a more welcoming place for everyone. This is a major part of inclusivity, and a way of showing disabled patrons that they matter beyond the physical space of the pub itself. Thank you Greene King for embracing this change and making inclusivity such a priority! 💜 https://brnw.ch/21wOAW4

Would you work the rest of 2024 for free? 📅 Today is #DisabilityPayGap Day, which means that’s effectively what disabled workers will do. Trades Union Congress (The TUC) reports on pay gaps every year. It works out the difference between disabled and non-disabled workers earnings 💷 This year, disabled workers were paid on average £4,300 less than non-disabled workers. Which means they’ll work the equivalent of the rest of 2024 for free. And that gap’s even bigger than last year, rising from 14.6% to 17.2%. Disabled people are also nearly twice as likely than non-disabled people to fall out of work. Inflexible working and negative attitudes are two of the main causes. This needs to change. Disabled people who want to work should be able to progress at work, and receive fair pay. The new government have already announced plans to make pay gap reporting mandatory. These changes can’t come soon enough. But all employers have a role to play in nurturing disabled talent, and supporting disabled people to thrive.

💻 Is it ableist to criticise typos at work? Bailey Smith makes some excellent points here about perceived professionalism. And why typos are a more complex topic that many people might realise. What do you think? Has this made you think of typos differently? 📽️ Video: @disabilitywithbailey (TikTok) Description: Bailey, a white person with medium-length brown hair, speaks to camera. They are wearing large patterned glasses and a dark jumper.

We're pleased to announce a new £1.8 million project with Cadent Gas Limited, the UK's largest gas network. We'll be working together to help disabled people struggling with fuel costs. Our work will focus particularly on supporting people who are digitally excluded, and who are therefore less likely to access support.

🚨 The #DisabilityPayGap has remained largely unchanged for the last decade. It cannot continue for another. Previous efforts to close the gap clearly haven’t gone far enough. Disabled people who want to work should be able to. And they should be paid fairly and equally. We welcome plans to introduce mandatory disability pay gap reporting. But there’s still a long way to go. The disability minister says that the government is determined to tackle this. So we’ll be watching closely for the actions to back it up ⬇️
