🪸 Reefs are internationally important marine habitats supporting food provision, jobs, and coastal defence. 🎣 Geographers at the University of Plymouth pioneered new methods to evidence habitat sensitivity to the physical impact from bottom towed fishing gear and provided new evidence of the economic beneficiaries of a healthy reef ecosystem. 📡 Long-term ecological monitoring in Lyme Bay was undertaken, which led to the development of novel, non-destructive, cost-effective underwater survey techniques. 📋The research developed a unique and critically important dataset that has significantly changed reef management in the UK. 🎉 This year marks 50 years since the Society’s Social and Cultural Geography Research Group (SCGRG) was founded! The group are interested in research which explores how social and cultural difference is produced, engaging with key debates concerning identity, citizenship, and belonging. To mark this milestone, yesterday, the SCGRG Committee hosted a day of discussion, debate and celebration at the University of Nottingham... 🗣️ Reflecting on the event as well as the group’s hopes for the future, SCGRG Chair Dr Rebecca Collins said: “Throughout the event, the word I heard most often was ‘community’. This reflected not only the genesis of social and cultural geography as a sub-discipline, but also what many in the room felt was critical to enabling social and cultural geography (and geographers!) to thrive over the next five, 10, 50 years." 👉 Read more and find out about SCGRG's work: https://lnkd.in/e2KvPG9N

🚰 Many rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa rely on boreholes and handpumps to access groundwater for their daily water needs. However, up to a third are out of action at any one time. 📑 Research by geographers at University of Oxford investigated the inadequate servicing of local water pumps in sub-Saharan Africa, leading to changes in practice, technology, and policy in the provision of water services in rural Kenya. 📊 Research findings initiated a social enterprise, FundiFix, which deploys ‘smart’ water handpumps and generates real-time data on their use and performance. The enterprise ensures the reliable delivery of around 73,000,000l of drinking water annually. Find out more 👉https://lnkd.in/e2RxH-sZ #UsingGeography
