Our mission as a College is to improve the health of women and girls globally. To drive this work forward in Bangladesh, our Gynaecological Health Matters (GHM) programme has supported 26 expert trainers to improve the gynaecological knowledge and skills non-specialist health practitioners across the country. Dr Ashutosh, a senior O&G consultant in Dinajpur and one of our expert trainers, has trained 38 health professionals in his district. The impact is clear – more women and girls are receiving the care they need in a supportive and respectful environment. Learn more about this transformative work, which we’re now pleased to be running in Nigeria thanks to funding thanks to funding from the Department of Health and Social Care working with the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET): https://brnw.ch/21wPzqM

The RCOG is committed to supporting our membership to provide more sustainable care, advocating for change at a national level, and to limiting the College’s own contributions to the climate and ecological crisis. In April, as part of this, the RCOG announced a collaborative project to tackle carbon and health inequity hotspots in the maternity care pathway. The College has partnered with the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, The Sustainable Healthcare Coalition, and the Royal College of Midwives to deliver the year-long project. This work was commissioned and funded by SBRI Healthcare. The project’s ultimate aim is to produce findings that can ensure future maternity care is delivered in the most sustainable way possible. The findings will be published in 2025. Read more: https://brnw.ch/21wPwI2

Today, the RCOG has published an updated Green-top Guideline covering the recognition and management of sepsis in the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods, including post-abortion sepsis. Reducing maternal death from sepsis requires high levels of vigilance and to “Think Sepsis” at an early stage with any unwell, pregnant or recently pregnant woman. Dr Geeta Kumar, Vice President for Clinical Quality said, ”Sepsis during and following pregnancy remains an important cause of maternal death globally, accounting for 11% of all maternal deaths. I’m pleased that the College has published an important update to this Green-top Guideline covering the recognition and management of sepsis in the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods, including herpes simplex sepsis and post-abortion sepsis. “We know from research published just last week by the Institute of Global Health Innovation that the gap between the UK and the best performing countries for deaths from treatable causes like sepsis had widened. This guideline provides systematically developed recommendations for healthcare professionals who care for women, non-binary and trans people suspected of, or diagnosed with, sepsis in primary or secondary healthcare.” Read the guidance here: https://brnw.ch/21wPwnL
