Ann Dean is a permaculture designer, perennial edible plant grower and CEO of FarmEco. She is passionate about connecting people with nature and local, healthy food as well as regenerating the planet.

Up to now, this crop was left for wildlife to enjoy. From now on, I think we will be sharing it with them! Medlar curd, medlar syrup, medlar cheese, medlar and walnut loaf are also to be recommended.

We're experimenting with processing some of our more unusual crops, many of which are highly nutritious. Here we have medlar jelly made with our medlars, our sea buckthorn juice (replacing lemon juice) and sugar from British sugar beet. We can see the sugar beet factory smoke at Newark from the farm, making this a truly local product. Medlar jelly is a great accompaniment to cheese or meat. Medlars taste like stewed spiced apples. We have over 150 medlar trees on the farm, making it one of the largest plantings in the country. One of our varieties is called "Nottingham", so they were clearly popular in the region in times gone by.

  • One of our surprise hits of the year has been our Mushroom 🍄🟫 Liqueur. We have made 5 different versions, this being the latest a seasonal Winter Spiced version. This has been a popular addition to the cheese 🧀 course at the super vegetarian restaurant Cafe Roya owned by ex Sat Bains team member Roya Bishop, who we now make exclusive liqueurs for.

  • This scary looking 👀 fruit is Medlar for our latest liqueur. They took about a month to bleat but are now nice and mushy. It will take a few months to mature 😔 but can’t wait to try this ancient tipple 🥃 Big thanks to Yasmin Willis’s friend who gave us these, a free bottle will make its way to both of you eventually 🤩🐶👍

  • Figgy Piggy Gose will be pouring on Sunday the Shiny Tap Christmas Market, in Little Eaton, Derbyshire This is a foraged beer with ingredients collected by ourselves and has been expertly crafted by the Shiny Tap Brewery. It contains Fig Leaf & Common Hogweed and has been brewed to an ancient raw/no boil method and was even cooled in the snow we had recently. Expect tart sour flavours with a touch of sea salt…. It’s bloody delicious!!

  • Really pleased to announce that after months of searching around we finally got some local Chaga mushroom 🍄🟫. This is an amazing medicinal mushroom with lots of health benefits. We found it at Oak Tree Farm on a Rigsbys Forage and Make LTD event and here it is combined with Ugandan 🇺🇬 Vanilla Pod into our latest Medicinal Tincture, love its beautiful golden colour. Thank you to Fiona for the illustration also from Oak Tree Farm rigsbys.uk/shop
