Last week at Climate Week NYC, we were proud to announce the first Certified Steel alongside the United States Steel Corporation. U. S. Steel's Big River Steel achieved a first in the industry, taking the next step on the journey toward responsibly produced near-zero steel through obtaining the first certification for ResponsibleSteel Certified Steel in the world. Now, it's time for the rest of the industry to follow suit. We need every steelmaking site globally to start making progress today. ResponsibleSteel™ is the industry’s first global multi-stakeholder standard and certification programme.
About us
At ResponsibleSteel, we believe in our mission to maximise steel’s contribution to a sustainable society. This can be done by achieving net zero carbon emissions for the steel sector as well as enhancing the responsible sourcing, production, use and recycling of steel. We are a not-for-profit multi-stakeholder organisation (currently waiting for charity status confirmation) founded to bring together business, civil society and downstream users of steel, to provide a global standard and certification initiative for steel. We have built a consensus on what sustainability looks like for steel – including the impacts of mining, steel production, the scrap metal supply chain, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, workers’ rights, communities and biodiversity. Our Members include steel makers, mining companies, buyers of steel from automotive and construction as well as civil society organisations focused on labour rights, biodiversity, climate change and many other important issues. We currently have over 130 members and 13% of global steel production in membership.

Reflections on a Transformative Year for ResponsibleSteel™ As 2024 comes to a close, our CEO Annie Heaton reflects on a year marked by significant milestones, despite the challenges posed by global geopolitical shifts and the urgent demands of our climate crisis. This year, we proudly: 🔷Announced the first Certified Steel, setting a new benchmark for sustainability in the steel industry. 🔷Collaborated with partners globally to enhance interoperability between standards. 🔷Celebrated the addition of new certified sites, strengthening and expanding our global network. 🔷Charted a clear pathway toward achieving net zero by 2025. We remain inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication of our members and stakeholders, leaders across industry, policy, and finance, working together to drive the production of and demand for near-zero steel. Thank you for your continued thoughtfulness, collaboration, and unwavering support of ResponsibleSteel throughout this year. We’re excited to see what we can accomplish together in 2025. 🌍 If steel were a country, it would be the 4th largest emitter globally. Yet steel is essential to our world. So how do we reduce emissions while maintaining its critical role in construction, infrastructure, and innovation? CEO Annie Heaton recently discussed ResponsibleSteel™’s work as a global, multi-stakeholder standards and certification initiative for responsible steel production with Sumit Bose on the Net hero podcast. Listen in to hear about: 🔹 The challenges of decarbonising steel; 🔹 The role of EAFs and hydrogen in the path to cleaner steel production; 🔹 ResponsibleSteel’s certification system to track and drive industry progress toward near-zero steel. As Annie explained, "50% of the world’s steel is better than average today. By 2030, we need all steel to meet this mark and a significant amount to exceed it." Whether you're in the steel industry, sustainability, or just curious about the future of low-carbon materials, watch the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/eFuKjzaj Energy Live News #ResponsibleSteel #Decarbonisation #SteelIndustry #Sustainability #EnergyTransition

The German Steel Association (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl) Joins ResponsibleSteel™ 🌍 We are pleased to welcome the German Steel Association to ResponsibleSteel! The German Steel Association represents Germany's steel industry, which has set itself the goal of achieving climate-neutral production by 2045 - and thus saving a third of total industrial greenhouse gas emissions. The association advocates for policies that enable Germany to transition to a climate-neutral steel industry while maintaining its competitive strength. With an annual production of approximately 35 million tons, Germany is a leading steel producer in Europe. The German Steel Association and its members have developed the Low Emission Steel Standard (LESS), which utilises similar design principles as ResponsibleSteel's Decarbonisation Progress Levels in Principle 10 (GHG Emissions). The system owner of LESS, the association LESS aisbl, was recently founded in Brussels, is currently being set up and supported by the German Steel Association. “As the association representing Germany’s steel industry, we support our members on their challenging path to climate neutrality. This transformation not only decarbonises steel production but also lowers emissions across many value chains, strengthening a sustainable industry by delivering low-emission steel. Standards like ResponsibleSteel and our Low Emission Steel Standard (LESS) are key to this effort. As part of the Steel Standard Principles, we are already working together to enable interoperability between standards. Our ResponsibleSteel membership strengthens collaboration between the two standards beyond the Steel Standard Principles reinforcing a commitment to sustainability and climate responsibility in steel production.” - Dr. Martin Theuringer, Chief Economist and Managing Director of the German Steel Association | Secretary General of LESS aisbl 🤝 We look forward to working closely with the German Steel Association going forward! #Sustainability #ResponsibleSteel #SteelIndustry #LESS #ClimateNeutrality #GermanSteel #SustainableSolutions

We're delighted to announce that ArcelorMittal Construction in Contrisson has been awarded ResponsibleSteel Core Site Certification! The certification underscores the site's holistic commitment to sustainability and the company's continued progress towards certifying all of its European operations. The Contrisson site produces around 300,000 tonnes annually, specialising in the manufacture of continuously rolled, galvanized and pre-painted sheets. The audit, conducted by DQS, demonstrated the positive relationships the site has built with local stakeholders, strong safety and environment management systems, a well-structured roadmap for the reduction of GHG emissions, and plans to improve the water management policy to name a few. COP29, dubbed 'the finance COP' has left many disappointed by its limited progress on critical issues like phasing out fossil fuels and addressing the vast financial gap for developing countries. The commitment to provide “at least $300 billion” annually in climate finance falls far short of the $1.3 trillion goal needed to drive meaningful action. However, amidst these challenges, there were significant developments for heavy industry and decarbonisation such as the launch of the Global Matchmaking Platform by the Climate Club, practical resources like the Industrial Deep Decarbonisation Initiative’s Green Public Procurement Guide and the Industrial Transition Accelerator’s Green Demand Policy Playbook, and continued efforts to harmonise standards for low-emission steel including a mapping of current methodologies by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
