About us
PyData Lancaster is the Lancaster chapter of the International PyData Community. For Lancastrians who are interested in all things data. We are not restricted to Python in particular but also welcome any other data tools. PyData provides a forum for the international community of users and developers of data analysis tools to share ideas and learn from each other. The global PyData network promotes discussion of best practices, new approaches, and emerging technologies for data management, processing, analytics, and visualization. PyData communities approach data science using many languages, including (but not limited to) Python, Julia, and R. We are dedicated to providing a harassment-free meeting experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of meeting participants in any form. All communication should be appropriate for a professional audience including people of many different backgrounds. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any conference venue, including talks. Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down other attendees. Behave professionally. This week, I had the chance to attend the PyData Lancaster x CODE Lancashire panel talk on How to get into data science! It was both inspiring and relieving to see people from all sorts of backgrounds making their way into data roles! It gave me that extra bit of reassurance that this journey is not only possible but incredibly diverse and exciting! From data science applications in psychology to physics and geospatial analysis, it was fascinating to hear how each speaker works with data in unique ways, using their distinct skills, backgrounds, and perspectives. It’s a reminder that there’s no one-size-fits-all in data science; it’s all about what you bring to the table!💡 I asked a couple of questions, and here are my main takeaways (plus, I’d love to hear from anyone else who has insights!): 1. How can someone without a traditional background stand out in the field of data science? 📝 Your non-traditional background is actually your superpower! Highlight the unique skills you’ve gained from your previous studies, and show how they translate to the data world. Changing fields demonstrates adaptability, continuous learning, and resilience—qualities that aren’t easy to come by when you’ve followed a straight, predictable path. In other words, being different is your competitive edge! 2. What would you do differently if you were starting your career today? 📝Besides one alleged regret over studying physics (I mean, physics is too cool to believe that), there was some solid advice: Google fearlessly, ask questions often, and fail more—because that’s where the real learning happens. Forget imposter syndrome—be the imposter! Walk into every room like you own the place, ready to fail and learn. And a funny but true comment made: instead of splurging on online courses you never finish, pay for a master’s; it’s amazing how committed you become when you’ve invested that much! 😂 (Phew, because that's what I'm doing) Overall, unlike your average stuffy networking event, PyData had it all: new insights, great networking, free pizza, and the kind of humour you only get when non-data and data folks come together. Safe to say, I’ll be back! 📸 Rory Southworth, Tanvi Vishwasrao

Tonight we have PyData Lancaster - but it's a bit of a special one for me. It's my last PyData as an Organiser! I'm stepping down from the organisation team after over 2 years of putting on Data Science meetups in Lancaster with Ryan Callihan and Joshua Bailey (and less recently Emily Ward and more recently Alin Morariu). I've loved my time hosting, shooting and helping to organise these events. PyData is a staple in the Lancashire Tech Scene and such a big part of the Data Science culture in Lancaster! I will still try to attend where I can going forward, but if you can join our PyData Lancaster X CODE Lancashire Panel talk this evening at Fraser House Hub (18:00-20:00) - I'll see you there! #DataScience #techmeetups #Lancaster

The most "Prominent" talk we've had so far! Jim Bloomer from the British and Irish Hills Database came to talk to the PyData Lancaster community about mapping hills across the UK. We learnt about Surveying, the mean Sea Level and mathematical models to uncover new hills! An excellent talk with many learnings! We look forward to seeing you at next month's talk on the 25th September at Fraser House Hub (18:00-20:00). #lancaster #techevents

Yesterday Jim Bloomer and I talked about Hills at PyData Lancaster. We covered the main factors: Elevation, Prominence and Isolation - before Jim explained the impact of improved data and modelling techniques - such as the Global Digital Elevation Model. The importance of a Key Col and a Parent Hill is now firmly in the minds of everyone that attended. Great event as always and a big thanks to my other co-organisers for letting me and Jim talk about our passions of hills and lists. This month's PyData talk - When is a hill, a hill? - Hills and Databases. We will be hearing from Jim Bloomer - British and Irish Hills Database Editor and accomplished hiker, having summited 1554 peaks in The UK with a drop on all sides of 150m! Jim has incredible experience of hills both through his work editing the database as well as through his accomplishments summiting many of the UK peaks. Joining Jim will be Rory Southworth - Ordnance Survey and Salomon Ambassador. Rory has summit every single peak in England over 600m (with at least a drop of 20m on all sides). The talk will discuss how hills are measured, defined and the mathematical models used in mapping the UK's hills. Join us on the 28th August at 18:00-20:00 at Fraser House Hub. There will be free drinks and pizza! Secure your spot here: https://lnkd.in/eAnvMwqE
