  • 💡 Britain Unveils Newest Strategy for Clean Energy Development  💡 On December 13, the UK government released the Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, proposing key changes to legislation, planning, and infrastructure to facilitate the development of clean energy projects. But while progress is being made, significant gaps remain that could hinder the country’s renewable energy ambitions. What’s Changing?  ⚡ Freeing Up the Grid: Addressing the 739GW connection backlog by prioritizing viable projects and streamlining regulatory and administrative processes.   ⚡ Redefining Project Thresholds: Projects over 100MW (onshore wind and solar) will now qualify as Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs), meaning the government would have the final say on approving wind farm projects larger than 100MW, rather than councils.  ⚡ Community Benefits: Local households near wind and solar farms could see energy bill discounts, encouraging public support.  ⚡ Funding Renewables: Expanded Contracts for Difference (CfD) auctions will allow developers to secure funding earlier in the project lifecycle, even before planning permission is finalized. Despite these advancements, the plan leaves critical gaps that need urgent attention: 🚧 Non-NSIP Projects Are Overlooked: Smaller renewable projects, which play a key role in decentralized energy generation, still face inconsistent policies and longer approval timelines. Local planning authorities lack clear guidance on integrating these projects into their plans, leaving developers in uncertainty. 🚧 Community Resistance: While community benefits like bill discounts are a positive step, there are still insufficient mechanisms to address local opposition or land-use conflicts, with government looking to weaken the rights of communities to apply for judicial review. Moving forward, it seems we need clear, consistent policies that align local planning with national energy priorities, empower smaller projects, and streamline processes across the board—without marginalizing the communities most impacted by these developments. • 💡 Ofgem Proposes £5-8 Billion to Tackle Grid Connection Delays💡 The UK’s transition to renewable energy is facing a significant roadblock: grid connection delays. Due to infrastructure bottlenecks and transmission constraints, some developers face up to 15-year wait times to connect their renewable projects to the grid—raising serious doubts about the government’s 2035 clean energy goals. To address this, Ofgem, the UK’s electricity and gas regulator, has proposed a £5-8 billion Advanced Procurement Mechanism (APM). This funding will enable transmission owners to pre-purchase critical infrastructure materials such as cables, switchgear, and steel. This process would ensure green-lit projects are ready to break ground as soon as planning approval is granted, with the key construction equipment already in place. While not a complete solution to grid connection challenges, by tackling supply chain delays, the APM could potentially accelerate grid reinforcements and the construction of new transmission systems. • Prop Sustainable had the privilege of attending yesterday's panel discussion hosted by Property Week, where thought leaders from Avison Young, JLL, Arup, and the City of London Corporation discuss "How will the Labour government’s drive for growth affect the commercial property sector?" Key takeaways from the panel discussion: 💸 Infrastructure Investment The Elizabeth Line’s £42 billion contribution to the UK economy underscores the value of public-private partnerships, with government responsibility to de-risk investments through predictable policies to sustain private sector engagement. 🌎 Net Zero While there is growing alignment between funding, commercial appetite, legislative targets, and consumer demand- fragmented standards across multiple governing bodies hinder progress. Pragmatic, unified governmental policies are essential to guide industries toward practical net-zero transitions. 🏠 Planning Reform Local objections to planning often center on social care, making investment in social infrastructure—such as schools, healthcare, and public spaces—essential for the Labour government to implement effective planning reform. • The recent 2024 Autumn Budget presents key legislative provisions that reinforce the UK's commitment to electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Provisions for EV charging infrastructure appear to align closely with the government's goal to phase out new internal combustion engine cars and vans in Great Britain by 2035, as outlined in the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate. While specific funding allocations for Great British Energy (GBE) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) remain forthcoming, the overall increase in investment for the energy transition is encouraging—particularly as other sectors face budget reductions. • Happy Diwali from Prop Sustainable! The newest member of our team, Akash Yadav, shares with us what Diwali means for him- and the lessons it holds for all of us. "To me, Diwali represents light overcoming darkness, renewal, and the strength of community. It’s a time to reflect on the year gone by and look forward with hope and purpose. Diwali encourages us to let go of what no longer serves us and make room for growth, compassion, and unity. One of the festival’s most profound lessons is that small acts of kindness and moments of reflection can create lasting change. Diwali reminds us that, just like a single light can dispel darkness, individual actions can contribute to a brighter, more harmonious world."

  • Today, Britain faces over 200 flood alerts as Storm Ashley causes widespread power cuts and travel disruptions. With gusts reaching 102mph, storms like this are not just a sign of changing weather patterns but a stress test for our critical national infrastructure (CNI). Interestingly, from last Tuesday until today, wind energy’s contribution to the grid surged from 33% to 65%*. While this highlights wind power’s potential, it also raises questions about the resilience of CNI. Increasing maximum wind speeds during storms are likely to affect power lines, data networks, rail systems, and even offshore wind turbines. As climate change continues to bring warmer winters, hotter summers, and rising sea levels, how prepared is our infrastructure to handle these shifts? Looking forward, the role of renewable energy will be pivotal—not just in decarbonizing the grid, but in building resilience against climate extremes.
