  • Great action plan from Lily Piddington here for grads looking to start building their network and knowledge of the job market while still at university! 🙌

Student at The Univeristy of Manchester | Prev: BGF, GP Bullhound, Entrepreneur First

I'm giving away my master plan... Pretty soon after starting university, I realised that my degree alone was not going to get me my dream job. Over the last three years, I've worked hard to build a strong foundation for my career. Here's everything I'm doing to create more opportunities for myself before I graduate from university next year. Let's break down my first four pillars: 1. Craft a standout CV and portfolio - I've created a CV that can be easily customised for any role - I'm launching my online portfolio to complement my CV - I'm preparing cover letter templates for different roles 2. Secure a relevant internship - I recently announced my internship at BGF, and I've previously interned with Plug and Play Tech Center and GP Bullhound - I recommend bookmarking job posting sites and companies that you're interested in interning with - I created a deadline tracker to stay on top of application opening and closing dates 3. Build a targeted company and role database - I've mapped out potential companies and roles I would be interested in and organised them in a Notion database - I'm identifying and connecting with employees at these companies to gain insights into potential roles - I'm attending events hosted by companies I'm keen to work for 4. Develop a networking game plan - I built a personal CRM in Notion to maintain my professional relationships - I'm planning to reach out to close contacts to share my career aspirations and seek their advice - I'm optimising my LinkedIn profile to align with my target roles and highlight my key skills and experiences Let me know if you'd like me to break down my other pillars, including how I'm leveraging my personal brand to take control of my career!

  • Having an introductory conversation with someone at work? Here's a proposed approach: 👋 Say hello, and introduce yourself (background, what you’re working on, what you enjoy in terms of your current role). Let them introduce themselves. 🚗 Find out what motivates them — this may be useful information later on. 🗣 Break the ice through specific topics where there is a common interest or connection: ‘I noticed you also spent a few years at X organisation before moving to Y firm! I also spent some time in the same department at X. Do you happen to know Gary…?’ 🙏 Thank them for their time and briefly explain what you want to get out of the conversation: ‘Thanks for taking the time to grab coffee! I wanted to understand your role and how that fits in with the wider organisation…’ 👂 Let them speak — pay attention to what they’re saying and jot down key notes if you want. ❓ Ask them if there is anything they need from you, and offer up information or key contacts that may be useful to what they’re working on or interested in. 🤝 At the end of the conversation, thank them again. Propose to stay connected. #coffeechats #workconversations

🌏 Good news for international students! 📚 A recent report confirms there is no widespread abuse of the UK’s post-study visa. The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) supports keeping this visa, emphasising its role in attracting talented students to the UK and benefiting universities financially. International students are crucial for UK higher education, providing essential funding that supports diverse courses, including vital STEM subjects. Despite recent rule changes affecting family member allowances, the MAC found no evidence that the graduate route is being misused. For any international students out there, know that your contributions are valued, and your presence enriches the academic community and the UK economy (bringing an estimated net benefit of £40 billion). The UK absolutely should not close its doors to diverse talent from all over the globe. If you are an international student considering the UK for your studies, or if you are already here and have concerns about the challenges you may face, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to support you. 🤝 #InternationalStudents #UKEducation #PostStudyVisa #HigherEducation #Support https://lnkd.in/e3yv43aw
