As consultants, we often come across discussions when clients surprise us with the process or workflows, which they have created over the years to fulfill their daily job. Sometimes it’s a fancy way to pull reports, a tricky workflow, or a checklist with so many steps that it feels like overkill. These are usually built with Excel macros, by internal IT teams (which are no longer there), or using third-party apps that don’t have support anymore, or just as an extension built onto their ERP because it couldn’t do what they needed. This makes us stop and think, “Why are they doing it this way?” or “Why is this process so overcomplicated?” And the answers we get are usually: “This is how we’ve always done it.” “It was built this way—don’t ask me why.” “It works, so why change it?” But here’s the funny (and frustrating) part, these complex setups often make everything take longer, even when the task itself could be simple and that lead to a question, do we really need it? Just last week, I learned there’s an actual management theory for situations like this. It’s called the "Dead Horse Theory", and once I heard about it, I couldn’t stop mapping it to all the projects and clients I’ve worked with. That’s what inspired me to write this article.
