For International #MigrantsDay, we're highlighting the fundamental freedoms and rights of all migrants, including asylum seekers, internally displaced people and refugees. These three blogs explore how policy & practice can better support migrants' rights, across diverse contexts where they are under threat; featuring some exemplary initiatives.    ❔ Ahead of the second Trump Presidency in the #US, what initiatives could support the potential increase in migrant returns to the Latin America and Caribbean region? Carmen Leon Himmelstine draws on new research with UNICEF Latin America and Caribbean. Read here: https://lnkd.in/ebWA-7uR   ❔ Migration deterrence strategies are popular among politicians, but what do we know about their effectiveness? Caterina Mazzilli explores the flaws of this concerning policy trend. Read here: https://lnkd.in/efaUw4yw   ❔ What does ‘home’ mean for people who are displaced? Reflections from the Humanitarian Policy Group's Caitlin Sturridge, with Paula Gaviria Betancur, Modjenpa Bibiche, Valeriia Vershynina and Alesia O'Connor, illustrate the need for aid actors to deepen the framing of home beyond a narrow focus on housing. On International Migrants Day, we are revisiting an insightful blog on the inclusion of migrant and displaced children in Latin America. Carmen Leon Himmelstine and Rachel Marcus highlight innovative approaches from the region that support children on the move – many of whom face perilous journeys, separation and rising xenophobia: 📚 Flexible education policies help children enrol in school despite documentation barriers. 🎶 Music and arts programmes, including mobile schools and orchestras, foster belonging and social cohesion. 🇲🇽 Alternative care models in Mexico provide unaccompanied children with safe foster care, offering community support and stability. 🏠 Independent living initiatives in Ecuador and Brazil equip adolescents with rent support, skills training and pathways to employment. But the challenges remain urgent. Migration across Latin America has reached record levels, with younger children increasingly at risk. Initiatives like these hold promise, but this blog reminds us that more evaluation is needed to understand their full impact and share lessons across the region and globally. #InternationalMigrantsDay #IMD2024 #MigrantsDay #ChildrenOnTheMove

  • Low-income countries face significant hurdles to building robust institutions. A shortage of economists often hinders their ability to formulate effective policies. Our Fellowship Scheme has matched more than 1,300 early-career economists with governments’ needs since it was established over 60 years ago. It's a win-win formula. Fellows work with host governments to transfer important skills and develop tailored solutions to respond to the countries’ needs. Fellowship alumni reach senior positions in government, international organisations, and the private sector. Find out more about the scheme: https://buff.ly/3DqP62w

  • "There is an oversimplification in our understanding between herder-farmer conflicts and the role of climate change... We can start this discussion with the climate, but we can also start it with years of political changes, ethnic differences, religious differences." New in Climate Home News: as COP16Riyadh wraps up, Camille Laville from our ODI Global Risks and Resilience team dissects the complex relationship between climate stress, conflict and competition for land in Africa's drylands: ⚡ Climate change is creating harsher conditions for pastoralists, but it is not the only factor undermining their resilience. 🧩 Long-term political marginalisation, restrictions on movement and competition for land have combined to make pastoralists less able to cope with shocks. 💡 Supporting pastoralists to build their long-term resilience requires a clear understanding of these interconnected issues. But at the same time, “if we wait to fully understand this issue, we will never have sufficient time for action." SPARC Ideas | International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)

COP29 negotiations on the 'just transition' – ensuring that the shift to a low-carbon world leaves nobody behind – ended without a decision text. But just transition principles are only growing in importance for countries. Mairi Dupar from our ODI Global Risks and Resilience team has some recommendations for how governments could reinvigorate the Just Transition Work Programme in 2025: 📢 Reframe the just transition as a way to manage the risks of green transitions, in order to give it a clear scope and distinguish it from other climate negotiation tracks. 🔬 Use the Work Programme as a platform to share information from countries where just transition programmes are under way. 🪜 Create actionable steps for how to manage transition risks: through finance, technology, capacity building, and action for climate empowerment. These steps would ensure that 'just transition' doesn't become “a basket in which everything and anything is thrown" – and continues to drive inclusion for the world's most vulnerable. #JustTransition #COP29 #GreenTransition

  • UK climate envoy Rachel Kyte joined us this week for a wide-ranging and timely conversation with the Chair of our Board Suma Chakrabarti about how to step up global climate finance and cooperation. A round-up of some of the key themes discussed: 💰 𝗧𝗵𝗲 $𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹. Initially set for 2020, this target has faced delays, ambiguity and questions about what counts as finance and how it is measured. 🌍 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. There's an urgent need to transition from billions to trillions in climate investments. This requires leveraging public funds to attract private capital, with a focus on innovative financial strategies that ensure money reaches where it’s needed most. 🌱 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀. Examples like Barbados’ 'debt-for-climate-resilience' swap demonstrate how public and private sectors can collaborate effectively. By restructuring debt for investment in critical infrastructure, such models create space for economic growth while building climate resilience. 🤝 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Trust and systemic reform (including of multilateral development banks) is key to better supporting climate goals. We also heard why loss and damage funds must be aligned with broader adaptation and mitigation strategies. The road ahead is challenging, but the conversation highlighted how through creativity, systemic reform and shared responsibility, we can tackle these obstacles and deliver sustainable, equitable climate solutions. • As the world watches US democracy navigate a second Trump presidency, questions of resilience take centre stage. Why was the "state of democracy" a top voter concern? And how can civil society and institutions collaborate to uphold US democracy? 🇺🇸 In a new blog, our researcher Sam Sharp explores what it takes to defend democracy in challenging times. By examining these questions, he offers actionable insights and global examples – from Poland to Brazil to Malawi – of resisting anti-democratic forces. 🌎 Whilst structural safeguards provide some optimism, the real test lies in how unified and strategic pro-democracy forces are in countering potential threats. 🤝 #Trump #Democracy #StateOfDemocracy #Resilience #USPolitics #Politics
